Hoya Krohniana Green

Hoya krohniana 'Green'

🌿 Hoya krohniana 'Green' is a delightful climbing houseplant from the Apocynaceae family, native to the Philippines where it thrives in warm, humid forests. This beginner-friendly hoya features small, heart-shaped leaves that create charming cascades of greenery. The compact growth habit and forgiving nature make it an excellent choice for first-time hoya collectors. Fun fact: the tiny leaves of Hoya krohniana are among the smallest in the entire hoya genus, giving it an almost fairy-like appearance when trailing from a hanging basket.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This vining plant produces petite, rounded leaves that are slightly cupped and succulent-like in texture. The foliage displays a lovely medium green colour with a subtle matte finish. Each leaf measures about one to two centimetres across, creating dense clusters along slender stems that can trail or climb depending on how you support them. The leaves have a charming heart shape and a slightly fuzzy texture when new growth emerges.

FLOWER DETAILS

Hoya krohniana 'Green' produces stunning clusters of star-shaped flowers in a soft peachy-pink to cream colour. The blooms are lightly fragrant with a sweet, honey-like scent that intensifies in the evening. Each umbel contains multiple waxy flowers that look almost artificial in their perfection. While this hoya can bloom throughout the year when happy, flowering is most common during warmer months. To encourage blooming, provide bright indirect light, avoid moving the plant once buds form, and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings during the growing season.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light works best, though it tolerates medium light. Aim for 4-6 hours of filtered sunlight daily near an east or north-facing window.
  • 💧 Water: Water when the top half of soil feels dry. During spring and summer, water every 7-10 days. In fall and winter, reduce to every 14-21 days. Bottom watering or thorough top watering works well.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home humidity around 40-50%.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining chunky mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir for aeration and moisture retention.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use a small plastic or terracotta pot with drainage holes. Hoyas prefer being slightly rootbound. Repot every 2-3 years or when roots emerge from drainage holes.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate growth with 15-30 cm of new growth in 6 months under ideal conditions. Expect 30-60 cm per year. Mature vines can reach 1.5-2 metres in length.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer or orchid fertilizer at half strength. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes, this hoya is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it safe for homes with curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This compact hoya works beautifully in hanging baskets near bright windows in living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices. It thrives on plant shelves, mounted on small trellises, or cascading from macramé hangers. Bathrooms with windows also provide the ideal humid environment. Avoid placing it in dark corners, directly in hot south or west-facing window sills where intense afternoon sun can scorch the delicate leaves, or in cold drafty areas near exterior doors or air conditioning vents.
