Hoya Lacunosa eskimo 6377

🌿 Hoya lacunosa 'Eskimo' is an exquisite, silvery-splashed cultivar of the beloved miniature wax plant in the Apocynaceae family, with parent species native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. In nature, the parent species grows as an epiphyte climbing tree trunks and dangling from canopy branches. It is a very forgiving, beginner-friendly houseplant cherished worldwide for its luminous frosted leaves, cascading habit, and extraordinarily fragrant blossoms.

FUN FACT

The parent species Hoya lacunosa has blooms with a cinnamon fragrance, especially at night.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

Hoya lacunosa 'Eskimo' is famous for its heavily variegated, frosted foliage. The leaves are small, measuring approximately 2.5 to 4 centimetres in length and 1.5 to 2 centimetres in width, featuring a distinct diamond-to-lanceolate shape with pointed tips and sunken veins. In this selected cultivar, the deep green leaf surface is almost completely overlaid with brilliant, silvery-white splash variegation, giving the plant a shimmering frosted appearance. It grows with flexible, freely branching stems that cascade gracefully over the sides of hanging planters or can be trained upward around a small desktop trellis.

FLOWER DETAILS

This variety is one of the most prolific and free-flowering Hoyas in indoor cultivation, frequently setting buds throughout the year. It produces tight, rounded umbels carrying 15 to 25 fuzzy, pillowy blossoms. The corolla lobes are strongly reflexed, velvety, and creamy-white, centered with bright yellow star-shaped coronas. The flowers open primarily at dusk and fill the entire room with an intoxicating, sweet perfume rich in notes of cinnamon, clove, and spiced honey. Never snip off old peduncles (flowering spurs), as new flower umbels repeatedly emerge from the exact same spurs year after year.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Prefers bright, indirect light for 6 to 8 hours daily. Abundant bright indirect light is necessary to sustain the dense silvery-white splash variegation. Shield from harsh midday direct sun, which can scorch the delicate foliage.
  • 💧 Water: Allow the top half of the potting medium to dry out before watering thoroughly. Use the soak-and-dry method and ensure all excess water drains away freely. Hoyas are sensitive to overwatering and soggy substrates.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Highly adaptable. Thrives in moderate to high humidity between 55% and 75%, but comfortably tolerates typical dry Canadian indoor home humidity (40% to 50%). Elevated humidity prevents crispy leaf edges.
  • 🪴 Soil: Plant in a light, chunky, and well-aerated potting mix composed of equal parts fine orchid bark, perlite, pumice, and coco coir to mimic natural epiphytic tree bark and foster root respiration.
  • 🏺 Potting: Best displayed in a small hanging basket or pedestal pot (10 to 12 centimetres) with drainage holes. It thrives when kept slightly root-bound, which accelerates flower bud formation. Repot only every 2 years.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower. Stems branch readily and elongate steadily during spring and summer, creating a lush, dense cascading curtain of frosted leaves.
  • 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed every 3 to 4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, liquid tropical houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Discontinue fertilizing during late autumn and winter dormancy.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes. The ASPCA specifically lists wax plants (such as Hoya carnosa and Hoya kerrii) as non-toxic to cats and dogs, though Hoya lacunosa is not individually evaluated by the ASPCA. The genus Hoya is widely recognized as non-toxic, making it an exceptionally safe flowering houseplant for pet owners.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Hoya lacunosa 'Eskimo' looks magnificent in a hanging planter near an east-facing window, on a bright kitchen shelf, or atop a living room bookshelf where its cascading silver vines can be admired at eye level. Ensure it receives gentle morning sun and is protected from cold winter window drafts below 15°C as well as direct hot air blasts from heating vents that cause premature flower bud drop.
