Hoya Lockii 'Yellow'

Hoya Lockii 'Yellow'

🌿 Hoya lockii 'Yellow' is a rare climbing variety from the Apocynaceae family, native to Thailand and Vietnam where it grows as an epiphyte on trees in tropical forests. This intermediate-level houseplant produces stunning clusters of fuzzy, star-shaped flowers with a yellow-cream colour that can fill a room with their sweet fragrance. The vining stems can reach several feet when given proper support, making it an excellent choice for hanging baskets or trellis displays. Fun fact: the flowers produce nectar droplets that shimmer like tiny jewels, which is why collectors sometimes call this plant "liquid sunshine."

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This climbing hoya develops long, flexible vines that need support to grow upward or can cascade beautifully from hanging containers. The leaves are small to medium-sized, roughly oval-shaped, and range from deep green to olive tones depending on light exposure. Leaf surfaces have a slightly waxy, semi-succulent texture that helps the plant retain moisture, giving each leaf a subtle sheen when light hits it.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers emerge in rounded clusters called umbels, each containing ten to twenty individual blooms. Each fuzzy, five-petalled star measures about half an inch across and displays creamy yellow to pale gold colouring with darker centres. The blooms release a sweet, honey-like fragrance that intensifies in the evening hours, creating an enchanting sensory experience. Flowering typically occurs once or twice per year when the plant matures, usually in spring through early autumn. To encourage blooms, provide bright indirect light, avoid moving the plant once buds form, allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings, and resist cutting off the peduncles (flower stalks) after blooms fade since new flowers emerge from the same spots.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light with some morning sun; needs 6-8 hours of quality light daily to promote flowering
  • 💧 Water: Allow top two inches of soil to dry between waterings; reduce frequency in winter. Water thoroughly until it drains, then empty saucer. Bottom watering works well
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home conditions around 40%
  • 🪴 Soil: Chunky, well-draining mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir
  • 🏺 Potting: Terracotta or plastic pot with drainage holes; 4-6 inch pot for young plants. Prefers being slightly rootbound. Repot every 2-3 years in spring
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow to moderate; adds 6-12 inches per year. Mature vines can reach 3-6 feet or longer over several years
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly spring through summer with diluted balanced fertilizer or orchid food; skip fertilizing in autumn and winter
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though ingestion may cause mild stomach upset. Keep out of reach as a precaution

WHERE TO PUT IT

Place your Hoya lockii 'Yellow' in bright rooms near east or west-facing windows where it receives gentle morning or late afternoon sun. Living rooms, bedrooms, and home offices with good natural light make ideal locations, especially when you add a small trellis or hang it where the vines can trail. Bathrooms with windows can work well due to higher humidity levels. Avoid placing it in dark corners, rooms with only north-facing windows, or spots with intense midday direct sun that can scorch the leaves. Keep away from cold drafts, heating vents, and air conditioning units that create temperature fluctuations.
