Hoya Lyi Hybrid (No ID) 6463

🌿 Hoya lyi 'New Form' is a captivating vining tropical from the Apocynaceae family, native to the limestone karst regions of southern China and northern Vietnam. This member of the Hoya genus grows as an epiphyte in its natural habitat, clinging to trees and rocky outcrops in humid, shaded forest environments. While it requires attention to watering and humidity levels, growers with some experience will find it rewarding to cultivate. Here's something interesting: Hoya lyi produces some of the most intensely fragrant flowers in the entire Hoya genus, with a scent that intensifies dramatically in the evening hours.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This vining Hoya displays a climbing growth pattern, sending out long stems that reach for support in search of light. The leaves are elongated and lance-shaped, measuring around 8-12 centimeters in length with a smooth, slightly waxy surface. Foliage emerges in a deep green shade with subtle veining that becomes more pronounced as leaves mature. The texture is semi-succulent and firm to the touch, with a leathery quality that helps the plant retain moisture during dry periods.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers appear in tight umbels of 15-25 individual blooms, each one star-shaped with reflexed petals in creamy white to pale yellow tones. A contrasting maroon corona sits at the centre, creating visual depth and interest. The fragrance is powerfully sweet and citrus-like, reminiscent of lemon zest mixed with honey, and this scent becomes almost overwhelming after sunset. These blooms are exceptionally beautiful and draw attention even from across a room. Flowering typically occurs once or twice annually during warmer months when the plant receives adequate light and has reached maturity. To encourage blooming, maintain consistent watering during the growing season, provide bright indirect light year-round, and avoid moving the plant once flower buds have formed.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is essential, though it tolerates some morning sun. Aim for 6-8 hours of filtered light daily, positioning near an east or west-facing window.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top half of soil feels dry, roughly every 7-10 days in summer and every 14-21 days in winter. Reduce watering significantly during cooler months. Bottom watering works well to prevent crown rot.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 60-80% humidity for optimal growth, though it adapts to average home levels around 40-50% with occasional misting.
  • 🪴 Soil: A chunky, well-draining mix is critical. Combine orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss or coco coir in equal parts.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use a terracotta or ceramic pot with drainage holes, sizing up only when roots fill the current container. Repot every 2-3 years in spring, as Hoyas actually bloom better when slightly rootbound.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate growth, producing 15-30 centimeters of new growth in 6 months under ideal conditions. Over one year, expect 30-60 centimeters of extension. Mature vines can reach 2-3 meters in length.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. A bloom-boosting formula high in phosphorus can be used once in early spring. Suspend fertilizing in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoya lyi contains compounds that can cause mild gastrointestinal upset in cats and dogs if ingested, including vomiting and drool. Keep out of reach of curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This Hoya thrives in bright living rooms, sunrooms, or bedrooms where it can climb a small trellis or cascade from a hanging basket near a window. Bathrooms with good natural light also work well due to elevated humidity levels. It's an excellent choice for a home office shelf where its vines can trail elegantly. Avoid placing it in low-light hallways, dark corners, or rooms without windows, as insufficient light will prevent flowering and slow growth considerably. Keep it away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and heating registers that cause temperature fluctuations.
