Hoya Mamasa Mini

Hoya Mamasa Mini

🌿 The Hoya Mamasa Mini is a compact tropical vining plant from the Apocynaceae family, native to the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. This beginner-friendly hoya is loved for its manageable size and rewarding growth habit, making it an excellent choice for anyone new to collecting hoyas or looking for a plant that doesn't demand much space. Unlike some of its larger relatives, this mini variety stays relatively petite, which is perfect for smaller shelves or hanging displays. Fun fact: the Mamasa region where this plant originates is known for its rich biodiversity and stunning mountainous terrain, giving this hoya a naturally hardy constitution.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This hoya has a trailing to vining growth habit, producing slender stems that cascade beautifully from pots or climb if given support. The leaves are small, oval to lance-shaped, and have a smooth, slightly waxy texture that helps the plant retain moisture. Leaf colour ranges from medium green to darker green depending on light exposure, and the foliage has a subtle sheen that catches the light nicely. New growth emerges lighter and gradually darkens as it matures.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers are creamy white to pale pink, formed in tight, rounded clusters that look almost like little wax sculptures. Each flower has a delicate, star-like shape with a contrasting centre, and they emit a light, sweet fragrance that's most noticeable in the evening. The blooms are charming without being overpowering, adding a touch of elegance to the plant's overall appearance. This hoya can flower multiple times a year once it reaches maturity, typically after a year or two of growth. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, avoid moving the plant once buds form, and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings during the growing season.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal. Can tolerate some direct morning sun. Needs around 6-8 hours of good light daily to thrive and flower.
  • 💧 Water: Water when the top half of the soil feels dry. In spring and summer, water every 7-10 days. In autumn and winter, reduce to every 14-21 days. Bottom watering or thorough top watering both work well.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Average home humidity (40-60%) is fine, though it appreciates 50-70% for optimal growth.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining, chunky mix. Combine potting soil with perlite, orchid bark, and a bit of charcoal for aeration.
  • 🏺 Potting: Terracotta or plastic pots work. Use a small to medium pot (10-15 cm diameter). Hoyas like being slightly rootbound. Repot every 2-3 years or when roots fill the pot.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate. Expect 10-20 cm of new growth in 6 months under good conditions, 30-50 cm in a year. Mature size typically stays under 1 metre in length indoors.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Skip fertilizing in autumn and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoyas contain compounds that can cause mild stomach upset if ingested by cats or dogs. Keep out of reach of curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

The Hoya Mamasa Mini does well in living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices where it can receive plenty of natural light without harsh direct sun. It's perfect for a sunny windowsill, a shelf near an east or west-facing window, or in a hanging planter where its trailing stems can show off. Bathrooms with good light can work too, as the extra humidity is a bonus. Avoid placing it in dim corners, dark hallways, or rooms with no natural light, as this will slow growth and prevent flowering. Keep it away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and heating registers.
