5.M. Hoya Mathilde Silver 6395
🌿 Hoya 'Mathilde' (Silver Splash form, in the dogbane family, Apocynaceae) is a beloved, miniature interspecific hybrid created by Belgian horticulturist Emilio Begine by crossing Hoya carnosa with the diminutive Himalayan species Hoya serpens. Combining the vigorous, forgiving nature of *H. carnosa* with the petite, button-like charm of *H. serpens*, it thrives in cultivation as an adaptable climbing or trailing epiphyte. It is an outstanding, beginner-friendly to collector-grade houseplant adored for its round, silver-flecked leaves and fragrant, fuzzy floral clusters.
FUN FACT
The parent species Hoya serpens is a small trailing vine found in the Himalayas and surrounding areas.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
Hoya 'Mathilde' is celebrated for its miniature, button-like succulent foliage and dense, graceful trailing habit. Slender, wiry stems produce opposite pairs of petite, nearly circular to broadly elliptic leaves measuring 1.5 to 3 centimetres in length and width. The foliage is thick, succulent, and lightly covered in delicate micro-hairs that impart a soft, velvety texture to the touch. In this selected 'Silver' clone, the deep forest-green leaf surface is lavishly dusted with intense, irregular silvery-white speckling and constellations of splash that shimmer under direct light. The flexible vines trail effortlessly over the sides of hanging pots or can be easily trained around small wire trellises and circular hoops, forming a dense, lush cascade of coin-shaped leaves.
FLOWER DETAILS
Mature specimens bloom readily throughout spring and summer, producing charming hemispherical umbels of 10 to 20 star-shaped flowers that dangle gracefully beneath the foliage. Each individual blossom measures about 1.5 to 2 centimetres across and features a fuzzy, velvety corolla ranging from pure white to pale blush-pink, centered with a porcelain-white corona adorned with a glistening ruby-red central star. The blossoms emit a delightful, sweet floral fragrance reminiscent of fresh honey and sweet spices, which becomes most pronounced during the evening and night hours. Flowering occurs repeatedly from the same short, persistent woody peduncles over many years, meaning spent peduncles must be carefully preserved during routine pruning.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Prefers bright indirect light for 6 to 8 hours daily. An east-facing window or filtered south exposure is ideal to maximize intense silvery leaf variegation and promote reliable flowering; protect the delicate round foliage from harsh direct afternoon sun.
- 💧 Water: Practice the soak-and-dry method. Water thoroughly when the potting medium has dried down through the top two-thirds of the container. While drought-tolerant thanks to its succulent leaves, it prefers slightly more consistent moisture than thick-leaved Hoyas, but must never sit in standing water.
- 🌡️ Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity between 50% and 70%, but adapts willingly to typical Canadian home humidity (35% to 50%). Elevated humidity encourages faster vine growth and larger leaf diameter.
- 🪴 Soil: Requires a lightweight, chunky, and well-aerated potting mixture composed of 50% small-grade orchid bark, 25% pumice or perlite, 15% coco coir husk, and 10% horticultural charcoal for rapid water percolation.
- 🏺 Potting: Best cultivated in small, snug 7 to 10 centimetre nursery pots or shallow terracotta planters with wide drainage holes. Being slightly root-bound stimulates earlier and more abundant flowering.
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower. It branches freely and produces fresh pairs of coin-like leaves steadily along its cascading stems throughout the active spring and summer seasons.
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed once every 3 to 4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, liquid tropical plant fertilizer diluted to one-quarter strength. Cease fertilizing entirely throughout late autumn and winter rest.
WHERE TO PUT IT
Hoya 'Mathilde' is ideal for a hanging planter near a bright window, a high display shelf, or a desktop trellis in a living room, office, or bedroom where its intricate silver speckling can be admired up close. Maintain comfortable indoor temperatures between 18°C and 26°C throughout the year, ensuring winter conditions stay above 12°C. Keep the plant away from drafty exterior entryways, cold windowsill drafts, and direct air currents from heat pumps or radiators.
