Hoya Mathilde 'Splash'

Hoya Mathilde 'Splash'

🌿 Hoya Mathilde 'Splash' is a charming hybrid houseplant that combines the best traits of Hoya serpens and Hoya carnosa. This member of the Apocynaceae family originates from the selective breeding of two Southeast Asian species, creating a compact cultivar perfect for indoor growing. With its manageable care requirements, this plant suits intermediate growers who want something rewarding without excessive fuss. Here's a fun fact: the 'Splash' variety gets its name from the silvery flecking that appears across its foliage, making each leaf look like it's been artistically spattered with metallic paint.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This hoya displays a trailing to slightly climbing growth pattern, making it ideal for hanging baskets or training on small supports. The leaves are small, fuzzy, and heart-shaped, typically measuring about 3-4 centimetres across. Each leaf features a deep green base colour decorated with irregular silver splashes and speckles that catch the light beautifully. The texture is semi-succulent and velvety to the touch, giving the plant a soft, tactile quality that sets it apart from glossier hoya varieties.

FLOWER DETAILS

The blooms appear in tight clusters of small, star-shaped flowers that range from white to pale pink with deep burgundy centres. Each individual flower measures roughly 1 centimetre across and has a waxy, porcelain-like appearance. The fragrance is sweet and subtle, most noticeable during evening hours, with hints of vanilla and honey. While the flowers are delicate and visually appealing, they're not the main attraction compared to the splashed foliage. Flowering typically occurs once or twice yearly when the plant receives adequate light and reaches maturity, usually after 2-3 years. To encourage blooms, provide bright indirect light, allow the soil to dry between waterings, and avoid removing the peduncles (flower stalks) after blooming, as they'll produce flowers again.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal, though it tolerates some morning sun. Aim for 6-8 hours of filtered light daily. Avoid harsh afternoon rays that can scorch the leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Water when the top 5 centimetres of soil feels dry, roughly every 10-14 days in summer and every 3-4 weeks in winter. Bottom watering works well to prevent water sitting on the fuzzy leaves. Let excess drain completely.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Comfortable in average home humidity between 40-60%, though it appreciates occasional increases to 60-70% during growing season.
  • 🪴 Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining mix with perlite, orchid bark, and peat or coco coir. The substrate should dry out relatively quickly to prevent root rot.
  • 🏺 Potting: Choose a small pot with drainage holes, just slightly larger than the root ball. Terracotta or plastic both work. Repot every 2-3 years or when roots emerge from drainage holes.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow to moderate. Expect 10-15 centimetres of new growth over six months under good conditions, reaching 30-45 centimetres in length after one year. Maximum mature size is typically 60-90 centimetres trailing.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce to every 6-8 weeks in fall and skip winter feeding entirely.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoya Mathilde contains compounds that can cause mild gastrointestinal upset, drooling, and vomiting if ingested by cats or dogs. Keep out of reach of curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This hoya thrives in east or west-facing windows where it receives filtered morning or late afternoon sun. It does well in living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices on shelves or in hanging planters where its trailing stems can cascade. Bathrooms with windows work nicely if the humidity boost is welcome, though standard household conditions are fine. Avoid placing it in low-light corners, directly beside heating vents, or in cold drafty spots near exterior doors during Canadian winters. Keep it away from south-facing windows with intense direct sun unless filtered by sheer curtains.
