🌿 The Hoya megalaster, a member of the Apocynaceae family, is a striking vining tropical from the Philippines. This beginner-friendly houseplant features thick, waxy leaves and clusters of sweetly scented flowers that appear like porcelain ornaments. In its natural habitat, it grows as an epiphyte, clinging to trees in humid forests. One fun fact: the nectar from its flowers is so abundant that it sometimes drips, earning Hoyas the nickname "wax plant" for their glossy appearance and sticky blooms.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This climbing beauty produces oval to lanceolate leaves with a deep green, glossy surface and subtle veining. The foliage is thick and succulent-like, storing water efficiently. As a vining plant, it naturally wants to climb or trail, making it perfect for a trellis, hanging basket, or cascading from a shelf. The leaves emerge in opposite pairs along slender stems that can extend several feet over time.
FLOWER DETAILS
The star-shaped blooms of Hoya megalaster are cream to pale yellow with burgundy centres, arranged in tight umbels that resemble geometric sculptures. Each flower measures about 2 cm across and releases a sweet, honey-like fragrance that intensifies in the evening. Flowering typically occurs once or twice a year during warmer months, and the same peduncle (flower stalk) will bloom repeatedly, so never remove it after flowering.
