Hoya Meredithi

Hoya meredithii

🌿 Hoya meredithii is a tropical vining plant from the Apocynaceae family, native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia where it grows as an epiphyte on trees. This charming hoya features small, succulent leaves and produces clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers that appear throughout the growing season. With moderate care requirements, it's suitable for intermediate growers who have some experience with tropical plants. Here's something interesting: the flowers of Hoya meredithii have a sweet, almost honey-like fragrance that intensifies in the evening, making it a wonderful choice for bedrooms or living spaces where you can enjoy its scent.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This hoya has a vining growth habit that makes it perfect for trailing from hanging baskets or climbing up a small trellis. The leaves are small and oval-shaped, measuring about 2 to 4 centimetres in length, with a succulent texture that stores water efficiently. They're deep green with a slightly glossy finish, and the foliage grows densely along flexible stems that can reach several feet over time. The compact leaf size gives the plant a delicate, refined appearance that works well in smaller spaces.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers of Hoya meredithii are tiny, waxy stars that form in tight, rounded clusters called umbels. Each flower is cream to pale yellow with a contrasting burgundy or reddish centre, creating a striking two-tone effect. The blooms produce a sweet, pleasant fragrance that becomes stronger in the evening and at night, filling the room with a subtle perfume. These flowers appear reliably once the plant is mature, often blooming multiple times throughout spring and summer. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to become slightly root-bound, and avoid disturbing the peduncles (flower stalks) after blooming, as they will produce flowers again in subsequent seasons.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal, though it can tolerate a few hours of gentle morning sun. Aim for 6 to 8 hours of filtered light daily to promote healthy growth and flowering.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top 2 to 3 centimetres of soil feel dry, typically every 7 to 10 days in summer and every 2 to 3 weeks in winter. Water less frequently during the dormant season. Use the soak-and-drain method, allowing excess water to flow through the drainage holes.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers humidity levels between 50% and 70%, though it adapts well to average home humidity around 40%.
  • 🪴 Soil: Use a well-draining mix such as equal parts potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark to ensure good aeration and prevent waterlogging.
  • 🏺 Potting: Plant in a pot with drainage holes, choosing a size that's just slightly larger than the root ball. Terracotta or plastic pots both work well. Repot every 2 to 3 years or when roots become tightly bound.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Grows moderately, adding 15 to 30 centimetres of vine length per year under good conditions. After 2 to 3 years, vines can reach 1 to 2 metres in length.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter when growth slows.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoya meredithii is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, potentially causing vomiting, drooling, and gastrointestinal upset due to compounds in the sap.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Hoya meredithii thrives in bright, well-lit rooms such as east or west-facing windows where it receives plenty of filtered sunlight. It's excellent for hanging baskets in living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices, and also works beautifully on shelves where the vines can cascade down. Placing it near a window where morning light streams in will support flowering. Avoid dark corners, bathrooms with low light, or spots with cold drafts from air conditioning vents or exterior doors, as these conditions can stress the plant and prevent blooming.
