Hoya mindorensis 'Yellow'

Hoya mindorensis 'Yellow'

๐ŸŒฟ Hoya mindorensis 'Yellow' is a vining tropical houseplant from the Apocynaceae family, native to the Philippine island of Mindoro where it grows as an epiphyte in humid forest canopies. This hoya is considered intermediate in care difficulty, requiring attention to watering and light but rewarding growers with clusters of fragrant blooms. The 'Yellow' refers to the warm honey-toned flowers rather than foliage colour. Fun fact: like most hoyas, this species can take several years to reach flowering maturity, but once it does, it blooms repeatedly from the same peduncles, so never remove spent flower stalks.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This hoya has a vining growth habit and will climb or trail depending on support. Leaves are oval to lance-shaped, thick and succulent with a waxy surface that helps retain moisture. The foliage is deep green with subtle veining, and leaves grow in pairs along slender stems that can reach several feet in length over time. The texture is firm and leathery, typical of epiphytic hoyas adapted to drier conditions between rainfalls.

FLOWER DETAILS

Flowers appear in rounded clusters called umbels, each containing multiple star-shaped blooms. The petals are pale yellow to cream with a darker golden or orange corona at the centre, creating a two-toned effect. Blooms are sweetly fragrant, especially in the evening, with a honey-like scent that intensifies at night to attract pollinators. The aesthetic appeal lies in the waxy, almost artificial-looking perfection of each flower. Hoya mindorensis 'Yellow' typically blooms in spring through summer when conditions are right. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to become slightly rootbound, and maintain consistent care without moving the plant once buds form.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • ๐ŸŒž Light: Bright indirect light for 6-8 hours daily. Can tolerate some morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays that may scorch leaves.
  • ๐Ÿ’ง Water: Water thoroughly when top two inches of soil are dry. In spring and summer, this may be weekly. In fall and winter, reduce to every 10-14 days. Bottom watering works well to encourage root growth.
  • ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home levels around 40%.
  • ๐Ÿชด Soil: Well-draining chunky mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Needs excellent aeration around roots.
  • ๐Ÿบ Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, preferably terracotta or plastic 4-6 inches wide. Hoyas prefer being slightly rootbound. Repot every 2-3 years or when roots completely fill the pot.
  • ๐ŸŒฑ Growth rate: Moderate. Expect 6-12 inches of new growth in the first year under good conditions. Mature vines can reach 3-6 feet in length over several years.
  • ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŒพ Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with half-strength liquid fertilizer formulated for flowering houseplants. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter.
  • ๐Ÿพ Pet friendly: No. Hoya mindorensis contains compounds that can cause mild gastrointestinal upset if ingested by cats or dogs. Keep out of reach of curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This hoya thrives near east or west-facing windows where it receives bright filtered light. It works well on shelves with trailing vines or trained up a small trellis in living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices. The plant also does nicely in bathrooms with windows, where natural humidity levels are higher. Avoid placing it in dark corners, north-facing windows with insufficient light, or directly in front of heating vents or air conditioners that create temperature fluctuations.
