Hoya Multiflora Variegated

Hoya Multiflora Variegated

🌿 The Hoya Multiflora Variegated, commonly known as the Shooting Star Hoya, is a stunning tropical vine in the Apocynaceae family. Native to Southeast Asia, this climbing plant thrives in warm, humid forests where it scrambles up trees and rocks. With its variegated foliage and unique star-shaped flowers, it's an intermediate-level plant that rewards patient growers. Fun fact: the flowers produce a sweet, waxy substance that attracts pollinators and can make nearby surfaces slightly sticky.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This vigorous climbing vine produces thick, waxy leaves that are oval to lance-shaped, measuring 7 to 12 centimetres long. The variegation appears as creamy white or pale yellow streaks and patches against deep green, creating a marbled effect that varies from leaf to leaf. The foliage has a leathery texture with a subtle sheen, and new growth often emerges with pink or bronze tints before maturing. The plant naturally trails or climbs, making it perfect for hanging baskets or training up a moss pole.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers are the real showstoppers—clusters of 15 to 40 waxy, star-shaped blooms that resemble tiny white shooting stars with reflexed petals and prominent yellow centres. Each flower measures about 2 centimetres across and has a light, sweet fragrance that intensifies in the evening. The blooms emerge from the same peduncles year after year, so never remove these woody stems after flowering. With proper care, mature plants bloom multiple times annually, typically in spring and summer. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, reduce watering slightly in late winter, and maintain consistent temperatures. The contrast between the variegated leaves and pristine white flower clusters creates remarkable visual appeal.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6 to 8 hours daily. Morning sun is tolerated, but avoid harsh afternoon rays that can scorch variegated leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Allow top 5 centimetres of soil to dry between waterings in growing season. Water deeply until it drains, then empty saucer. Reduce frequency in winter to every 2 to 3 weeks. Bottom watering works well to encourage root development.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50 to 70 percent humidity. Tolerates average home conditions but benefits from occasional misting or a pebble tray.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining, chunky mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss. Needs excellent aeration to prevent root rot.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, 15 to 20 centimetres diameter. Prefers being slightly rootbound. Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower, adding 15 to 30 centimetres of vine length per year. Can reach 2 to 3 metres at maturity with support.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted liquid fertilizer (half strength). Stop feeding in autumn and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Contains toxins that can cause vomiting and gastrointestinal irritation if ingested by cats or dogs. Keep out of reach of curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Place this plant near an east-facing window where it'll receive gentle morning sun and bright light throughout the day. It thrives in living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices with good natural light. Train it up a trellis, moss pole, or let it cascade from a hanging basket or high shelf. Works beautifully in bathrooms with windows, where ambient humidity helps it flourish. Avoid dark corners, rooms without windows, or spots near heating vents and air conditioners that create temperature fluctuations. Keep away from cold drafts in winter and ensure it's positioned where pets can't nibble the foliage.
