Hoya oblongata 6701

Hoya oblongata 6701

🌿 The Hoya oblongata is a tropical vine from the Apocynaceae family, native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia where it grows as an epiphyte on tree branches. This climbing plant produces thick, waxy leaves and clusters of fragrant flowers that attract pollinators in its natural habitat. Care difficulty is intermediate, requiring attention to watering and light conditions. Here's something interesting: the nectar from its flowers is so sweet that it can actually drip from the blooms, which is why some growers place trays underneath flowering plants.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This hoya displays a vining growth habit with stems that can trail or climb when given support. The leaves are elongated and oblong in shape, measuring several inches in length. Foliage appears in a deep green colour with a glossy, almost plastic-like waxy texture that helps the plant retain moisture. New growth emerges lighter in colour before maturing to the characteristic dark green.

FLOWER DETAILS

The blooms form in rounded clusters called umbels, with each individual flower shaped like a small star. Flower colour ranges from white to pale pink with contrasting dark pink or burgundy centres. A strong, sweet fragrance develops in the evening hours and at night, filling nearby rooms with perfume. The aesthetic is exotic and waxy, almost artificial in appearance. Flowering typically occurs once or twice per year when conditions are right. To encourage blooming, provide bright indirect light, avoid moving the plant during bud formation, and allow the plant to become slightly rootbound while maintaining consistent care throughout the year.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6-8 hours daily. Some morning sun is tolerated but avoid harsh afternoon rays that can scorch leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Spring and summer: water when top 2 inches of soil dry out, roughly every 7-10 days. Fall and winter: reduce to every 14-18 days. Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom, then discard excess. Bottom watering works well for hoyas.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home conditions around 40-50%.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining chunky mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Aeration is critical to prevent root rot.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use pots with drainage holes, terracotta or plastic both work. Choose a pot only 1-2 inches larger than root ball. Repot every 2-3 years or when severely rootbound, though hoyas flower better when slightly pot-bound.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate growth. Expect 6-12 inches in the first 6 months under good conditions, 12-24 inches in a year. Mature vines can reach 6-10 feet in length over several years.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly from spring through early fall with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer or specialized orchid formula. Stop fertilizing in late fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoya oblongata contains compounds that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy if ingested by cats or dogs. The sap may also cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This hoya thrives near east or west-facing windows where it receives filtered morning or late afternoon light. Living rooms, bedrooms, and home offices with adequate natural light are ideal locations. It looks stunning on shelves where the vines can trail down or near a trellis for climbing. Bathrooms with windows can provide the extra humidity this plant appreciates. Avoid placing it in dark corners, near heating vents that create dry air, or in cold drafty areas near exterior doors and windows during winter months.
