Hoya Odetteae 6711

Hoya Odetteae 6711

🌿 Hoya odetteae is a rare climbing tropical vine from the Apocynaceae family, native to the Philippines where it grows as an epiphyte in humid forest canopies. This intermediate-level hoya rewards patient growers with waxy, fragrant blooms and thick succulent foliage that stores water efficiently. One fascinating trait: its flowers can last several weeks and produce sweet nectar droplets that glisten at night, attracting nocturnal pollinators in its natural habitat.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

Hoya odetteae grows as a climbing vine with long, flexible stems that can reach several feet when mature. The leaves are thick and succulent, oval to lance-shaped, with a smooth waxy texture and deep green colour. New growth emerges lighter green and hardens over time, creating subtle colour variation along the vines. The foliage has a leathery feel and reflects light beautifully, giving the plant a polished appearance even without flowers.

FLOWER DETAILS

The star-shaped blooms appear in rounded clusters called umbels, typically holding 10 to 20 individual flowers. Each flower is creamy white to pale pink with a darker pink or maroon centre corona, creating a striking two-tone effect. The fragrance is sweet and honey-like, strongest in the evening and overnight. Blooms can last two to three weeks per umbel, and the plant may flower multiple times throughout the growing season if conditions are ideal. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, allow the soil to dry between waterings, and avoid moving the plant once flower buds form. Mature plants with established root systems bloom more reliably than younger specimens.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6-8 hours daily. Can tolerate some morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays which may scorch leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when top 2-3 inches of soil are dry. In spring and summer, this may be weekly. In fall and winter, reduce to every 10-14 days. Bottom watering or soaking method works well to ensure even moisture without overwatering.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home levels around 40-50%. Higher humidity encourages faster growth and more reliable blooming.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining chunky mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Avoid dense potting soil that stays wet.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, terracotta or plastic both work. Keep slightly rootbound for best flowering. Repot every 2-3 years in spring, only going up one pot size.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower. Expect 6-12 inches of new growth over 6 months under good conditions. In one year, vines can extend 1-2 feet. Mature size can reach 6-10 feet in length with proper support.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer or specialized hoya formula. Reduce to every 6-8 weeks in fall and pause in winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoya odetteae contains compounds that can cause mild gastrointestinal upset if ingested by cats or dogs. Keep out of reach of curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Hoya odetteae thrives near east or north-facing windows where it receives gentle morning light or consistent bright indirect exposure throughout the day. It works beautifully in living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices on shelves or hanging planters where its vines can trail or be trained up a small trellis. Bathrooms with windows can provide ideal humidity. Avoid placing it in low-light corners, near heating vents, or in rooms with cold drafts from exterior doors. Keep away from direct southern or western sun exposure during peak afternoon hours, as the leaves may develop brown scorch marks.
