Hoya Panchoi
🌿 Hoya panchoi is a charming vining plant from the Apocynaceae family, native to the tropical forests of Thailand. This intermediate-care Hoya features distinctive narrow leaves and produces clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers that smell sweetly of chocolate and vanilla. The plant adapts well to indoor growing and rewards patient growers with its unique blooms. Fun fact: Hoya panchoi was only formally described in 2015, making it one of the newer species in the Hoya genus to be recognized by botanists.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This climbing Hoya displays long, slender leaves that are dark green with lighter venation running through them. The leaves grow in opposite pairs along trailing vines that can extend several feet when mature. Each leaf is slightly succulent with a smooth, waxy texture that helps the plant retain moisture. The foliage has a glossy finish that catches light beautifully, and the compact leaf arrangement creates an elegant cascading effect when grown in a hanging basket or allowed to trail from a shelf.
FLOWER DETAILS
The flowers appear in rounded clusters called umbels, with each bloom displaying five pointed petals that form a perfect star shape. The petals are creamy white with soft pink centers, and the inner corona has a slightly darker pink hue. The fragrance is one of the most remarkable features, releasing a sweet chocolate-vanilla scent that intensifies in the evening hours. Blooms can last up to two weeks and appear multiple times throughout the growing season when the plant is mature and healthy. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, maintain consistent watering during the growing season, allow the plant to become slightly rootbound, and avoid cutting off old flower stalks since Hoya often rebloom from the same peduncles.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal, with 4-6 hours daily. Can tolerate some morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays that may scorch leaves.
- 💧 Water: Water when the top 2-3 inches of soil feel dry. Water more frequently in spring and summer, less in fall and winter. Bottom watering works well to ensure even moisture distribution without wetting the leaves.
- 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home conditions of 40-50%.
- 🪴 Soil: Well-draining mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Soil should dry between waterings but retain some moisture.
- 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, preferably terracotta or plastic. Start with a 4-6 inch pot and repot every 2-3 years. Hoya prefer being slightly rootbound.
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate growth with 6-12 inches of new growth in 6 months under good conditions. In one year, vines can extend 1-2 feet. Mature vines can reach 3-6 feet in length.
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter.
- 🐾 Pet friendly: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though ingestion may cause mild stomach upset. The sap can occasionally cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals.
WHERE TO PUT IT
Hoya panchoi thrives in bright rooms with filtered light, making it perfect for east or north-facing windows, or a few feet back from a south or west window. It looks stunning in hanging baskets in living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices where its trailing vines can be appreciated. The plant also does well on high shelves or plant stands where it can cascade naturally. Bathrooms with windows provide ideal humidity levels. Avoid placing it in dark corners, near heating vents, or in rooms with cold drafts near exterior doors or windows during winter months.
