Hoya Pandurata 'Vietnam'

Hoya Pandurata 'Vietnam'

🌿 The Hoya pandurata, commonly known as Wax Plant, belongs to the Apocynaceae family and hails from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Vietnam. This intermediate-level houseplant rewards patient growers with its unique foliage and charming blooms. In its natural habitat, this hoya grows as an epiphyte, clinging to tree bark in humid forests. Here's something interesting: the flowers produce a sweet, honey-like fragrance that intensifies at night, attracting pollinators in the wild and delighting indoor growers lucky enough to experience blooms.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This vining hoya displays a climbing growth habit, perfect for trellises or hanging displays where its stems can cascade gracefully. The leaves are distinctly paddle-shaped with a gently tapered base, giving the plant its name (pandurata means fiddle-shaped in Latin). Each leaf showcases a deep green colour with subtle lighter veining throughout. The texture is thick and succulent-like, with a smooth, waxy surface that reflects light beautifully and helps the plant retain moisture during dry periods.

FLOWER DETAILS

The blooms emerge in rounded clusters called umbels, each containing multiple star-shaped flowers. Each individual flower displays creamy white to pale pink petals with a darker pink or burgundy centre corona. The fragrance is sweet and reminiscent of honey with floral undertones, becoming more pronounced during evening hours. While the flowers are small, their collective visual impact in clusters is quite striking against the dark foliage. This hoya typically flowers once or twice yearly when mature and provided with proper care conditions. To encourage flowering, allow the plant to become slightly root-bound, provide bright indirect light, reduce watering slightly during winter months, and never remove the peduncles (flower stalks) after blooms fade, as new flowers will emerge from the same spots.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal, though it tolerates some direct morning sun. Aim for 6-8 hours of quality light daily. Avoid harsh afternoon sun which can scorch leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 inches of soil feel dry, typically every 7-10 days in summer and every 14-21 days in winter. Allow excess water to drain completely. Bottom watering works well to prevent crown rot.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Thrives in 50-70% humidity range, though it adapts to average home humidity of 40-50% without major issues.
  • 🪴 Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining mix combining orchid bark, perlite, and potting soil in roughly equal parts. Good aeration around roots prevents rot.
  • 🏺 Potting: Choose a pot with drainage holes, sized just slightly larger than the root ball. Terra cotta or plastic both work well. Repot every 2-3 years or when roots emerge from drainage holes, as slight root restriction encourages flowering.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate growth, producing 3-6 inches of new vine length over six months under good conditions. Within a year, expect 8-15 inches of growth. Mature vines can reach 4-6 feet in length over several years.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce to every 6-8 weeks in autumn and winter when growth slows.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes, this hoya is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safe choice for homes with curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This hoya works beautifully in living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices where it receives bright ambient light near an east or west-facing window. It's an excellent candidate for hanging planters or placed on shelves where vines can trail down, or train it up a small trellis for a vertical display. Bathrooms with windows also suit this plant due to naturally higher humidity levels. Avoid placing it in dimly lit corners, dark hallways, or directly beside heat vents and air conditioning units where temperature fluctuations and dry air can stress the plant.
