Hoya Papuana IM08
🌿 Hoya papuana is a tropical vining plant from the Apocynaceae family, native to Papua New Guinea where it grows as an epiphyte in humid rainforests. This intermediate-level hoya features thick, waxy leaves and produces clusters of fragrant flowers that smell sweetest at night. The species was first described in the early 2000s, making it a relatively recent addition to the houseplant world. Fun fact: like many hoyas, H. papuana can live for decades and often flowers more prolifically as it matures.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This hoya displays a vining growth pattern that can climb or trail depending on how you support it. The leaves are oval to lance-shaped, measuring around 8-12 cm long, with a leathery, succulent texture. They emerge medium green with subtle veining and maintain a smooth, glossy surface. New growth often appears lighter before darkening as it matures.
FLOWER DETAILS
The star-shaped flowers appear in rounded clusters called umbels, typically holding 10-20 individual blooms. Each flower is creamy white to pale pink with a darker pink or red centre, and the waxy petals have a porcelain-like appearance. The fragrance is sweet and citrusy, intensifying in the evening and overnight. These blooms are genuinely stunning and last about a week per umbel. Hoya papuana flowers more readily when it's slightly rootbound, receives adequate light, and experiences a slight temperature drop at night during the growing season. Mature plants may bloom multiple times throughout spring and summer.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal, around 6-8 hours daily. Can tolerate some morning sun but protect from harsh afternoon rays.
- 💧 Water: Let the top half of soil dry between waterings. Water thoroughly until it drains out the bottom. Reduce frequency in winter. Bottom watering works well to avoid getting water on leaves.
- 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home levels around 40-50%.
- 🪴 Soil: Well-draining chunky mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Needs excellent aeration around roots.
- 🏺 Potting: Choose a pot with drainage holes, terracotta or plastic both work. Keep slightly rootbound to encourage flowering. Repot every 2-3 years in spring.
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower, adding 15-30 cm of vine length per year under good conditions. Can reach several metres over time if allowed to climb.
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted balanced fertilizer or bloom-focused formula. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter.
- 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoya papuana contains compounds that can cause mild gastrointestinal upset if ingested by cats or dogs. Keep out of reach of curious pets.
WHERE TO PUT IT
Place your Hoya papuana near an east or west-facing window where it gets plenty of bright, filtered light. It works beautifully on a shelf with a small trellis or in a hanging planter where the vines can cascade. Bedrooms, living rooms, and home offices are all suitable as long as the light is adequate. Avoid placing it in dark corners, bathrooms with low light, or directly in south-facing windows where the intense sun might scorch the leaves. Keep it away from cold drafts and heating vents.
