Hoya Paradisea

Hoya Paradisea

🌿 Hoya paradisea, commonly known as Paradise Hoya, is a tropical flowering vine in the Apocynaceae family, originally from Southeast Asia. This beginner-friendly plant comes from humid forest environments where it climbs trees to reach dappled sunlight. The name 'paradisea' refers to its paradise-like clusters of fragrant star-shaped flowers that seem almost too perfect to be real. Here's a fun fact: the waxy blooms produce nectar droplets that can last for weeks, and the same flower stem will bloom repeatedly year after year, so never remove old flower stalks.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This vining hoya has a trailing to climbing growth habit that works well in hanging baskets or trained up a small trellis. The leaves are thick and succulent-like, oval to lance-shaped, with a smooth waxy surface that feels almost rubbery to the touch. Foliage colour is a rich green, sometimes with subtle silver flecking that catches the light. New growth emerges slightly lighter before maturing to the deeper green shade.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers are the real showstopper on this plant. Each bloom cluster contains multiple star-shaped flowers with five pointed petals, creamy white to pale yellow in colour with a contrasting burgundy or pink centre. The fragrance is sweet and honey-like, strongest in the evening hours. Blooms have a porcelain or wax-like appearance that almost looks artificial. With proper care, Hoya paradisea can flower multiple times throughout spring and summer. To encourage more blooms, provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to become slightly root-bound, and avoid moving it once buds begin to form.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal, around 6-8 hours daily. Can tolerate some morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top half of soil feels dry. In spring and summer, this might be weekly; in fall and winter, every 10-14 days. Bottom watering works well to avoid wetting the leaves.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home levels of 40-50%.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining mix with chunky components like orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Needs excellent drainage to prevent root rot.
  • 🏺 Potting: Plastic or terracotta pot with drainage holes, 10-15 cm for young plants. Hoyas prefer being slightly root-bound, so repot only every 2-3 years.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate growth, adding 15-30 cm in the first year under good conditions. Can reach 1-2 metres in length at maturity over several years.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. No fertilizer needed in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes, Hoya paradisea is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it safe for homes with curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Hoya paradisea thrives in bright bathrooms where it can enjoy higher humidity, or in living rooms and bedrooms near east or west-facing windows. It looks beautiful in a hanging basket where the vines can cascade, or on a high shelf with trailing growth. You can also train it up a small trellis or moss pole for a more compact display. Avoid placing it in dark corners, directly beside heating vents, or in rooms that get very cold at night, as consistent temperatures between 16-27°C work best.
