Hoya parviflora 'Splash'
🌿 Hoya parviflora 'Splash', commonly known as the Wax Plant or Splash Hoya, is a charming vining member of the Apocynaceae family native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. In its natural habitat, this epiphytic species climbs trees and thrives in warm, humid conditions with dappled light filtering through the canopy. It's a beginner-friendly plant that rewards minimal effort with steady growth and occasional fragrant blooms. Fun fact: the silvery splashes on its leaves are actually air pockets beneath the leaf surface, giving each leaf a unique pattern like tiny constellations.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This trailing and climbing hoya produces slender vines that can cascade gracefully from hanging baskets or be trained upward on a support. The leaves are small, oval to lance-shaped, and feature a deep green base generously speckled with silvery-white splash markings. Each leaf has a slightly succulent texture with a subtle waxy coating, making them feel smooth and almost rubbery to the touch.
FLOWER DETAILS
The blooms appear in tight, rounded clusters called umbels, each containing tiny star-shaped flowers that are cream to pale pink with darker burgundy centres. They emit a sweet, honey-like fragrance that intensifies in the evening, creating a subtle but delightful scent in your space. While flowering isn't constant, mature plants typically bloom once or twice a year during warmer months. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to become slightly root-bound, and avoid moving it once flower buds form.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 4-6 hours daily. Can tolerate some direct morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays
- 💧 Water: Allow soil to dry out almost completely between waterings. Water thoroughly but less frequently in winter. Bottom watering works well to prevent stem rot
- 🌡️ Humidity: Thrives in 50-70% humidity but adapts well to average home conditions around 40%
- 🪴 Soil: Well-draining chunky mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir
- 🏺 Potting: Small terracotta or plastic pot with drainage holes. Prefers being slightly root-bound. Repot every 2-3 years or when roots emerge from drainage holes
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower. Expect 15-30 cm of new growth in 6 months under ideal conditions, 30-60 cm annually. Vines can reach 1-2 metres at maturity
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce to every 6-8 weeks in fall and winter
- 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoya parviflora contains compounds that can cause mild gastrointestinal upset if ingested by cats or dogs, including drooling, vomiting, or diarrhea
WHERE TO PUT IT
This hoya works beautifully in bright living rooms near east or west-facing windows, in bathrooms with good natural light where it can enjoy extra humidity, or in home offices on shelves where its vines can trail. It also makes an excellent hanging plant in bedrooms or kitchens. Avoid placing it in dimly lit corners, near cold drafts from air conditioners, or in windowless rooms, as insufficient light will prevent flowering and slow growth significantly.
