Hoya phuwuaensis
🌿 Hoya phuwuaensis is a rare tropical vine from the Apocynaceae family, native to the limestone cliffs of northern Thailand. This beginner-friendly plant was only recently described to science and remains uncommon in cultivation. It produces thick, waxy leaves and clusters of fragrant flowers that smell sweetest at night. Fun fact: this species was discovered growing in bat caves, where it adapted to survive on minimal light and irregular moisture.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This Hoya grows as a trailing or climbing vine with flexible stems that can extend several feet over time. The leaves are small to medium-sized, oval to lanceolate in shape, and have a smooth, slightly succulent texture. Leaf colour ranges from deep green to grey-green, sometimes developing a silvery sheen under bright light. The foliage is spaced along wiry stems, creating an open, graceful appearance.
FLOWER DETAILS
The flowers of Hoya phuwuaensis appear in rounded umbels of 10 to 20 blooms. Each flower is star-shaped with reflexed petals that are cream to pale yellow, often with a pink or maroon corona in the centre. The blooms emit a sweet, honey-like fragrance that intensifies in the evening and overnight. Flowering typically occurs in spring and summer under consistent care. To encourage blooms, provide bright indirect light, allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings, and avoid moving the plant once buds form.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 4-6 hours daily. Tolerates partial shade but flowers best with more light.
- 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry. Reduce frequency in winter. Bottom watering or soaking method works well.
- 🌡️ Humidity: Average home humidity of 40-60% is fine. Tolerates lower humidity once established.
- 🪴 Soil: Well-draining, chunky mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir.
- 🏺 Potting: Small to medium plastic or terracotta pot with drainage holes. Repot every 2-3 years or when roots fill the pot.
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate. Expect 15-30 cm of new growth per year. Can reach 1-2 metres in length when mature.
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly in spring and summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce or stop in fall and winter.
- 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoya phuwuaensis contains compounds that may cause mild stomach upset if ingested by cats or dogs.
WHERE TO PUT IT
Place Hoya phuwuaensis in a bright bathroom, bedroom, or living room where it can trail from a shelf or climb a small trellis. It does well near east or west-facing windows with sheer curtains. Avoid placing it in dark corners, near heating vents, or in rooms with heavy drafts. This plant adapts to typical Canadian indoor conditions but appreciates stable temperatures and consistent light.
