Hoya Polyneura 'Fish Tail' broget (Splash)

🌿 The Hoya polyneura 'Fish Tail', also known as the variegated fish tail Hoya, is a stunning tropical epiphyte from the Apocynaceae family. Native to the Himalayan regions where it clings to trees in warm, humid forests, this climbing vine has become a favourite among intermediate collectors. The common name comes from the unique shape of its leaves, which truly resemble fish tails. Here's something you probably didn't know: in its natural habitat, this Hoya can grow over 6 feet long, weaving through forest canopies and creating living curtains of foliage.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This is a vining plant that loves to climb or trail, depending on how you support it. The leaves are elongated and slightly curved with prominent veining that stands out against the green base colour. What makes the variegated version special is the creamy white to pale yellow splashes scattered across each leaf. The texture is semi-succulent and slightly waxy, typical of Hoyas, with a smooth feel that catches light beautifully.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers arrive in clusters called umbels, with each tiny bloom shaped like a perfect five-pointed star. They range from peachy-pink to coral-orange with a darker red centre, creating a stunning contrast. The fragrance is sweet and slightly citrusy, strongest in the evening hours. These blooms are genuinely eye-catching and can last several weeks once they appear. Flowering happens mainly in spring and summer, though mature plants in ideal conditions may bloom multiple times per year. To encourage flowering, give your Hoya plenty of bright indirect light, allow it to become slightly root-bound, and resist the urge to cut off the flower spurs after blooms fade since they'll produce flowers again from the same spot.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6-8 hours daily. Can tolerate some morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays that may scorch variegated leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Spring/summer: when top 2 inches of soil dry out, roughly every 7-10 days. Fall/winter: reduce to every 2-3 weeks. Water thoroughly until it drains, then let it dry between waterings. Bottom watering works well.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 60-80% humidity but adapts to average home conditions around 40-50%.
  • 🪴 Soil: Chunky, well-draining mix. Combine orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir in equal parts.
  • 🏺 Potting: Choose a pot slightly snug for the root system. Terracotta or plastic both work. Repot every 2-3 years or when seriously root-bound, as Hoyas flower better when roots are cozy.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate. Expect 4-8 inches of new growth over 6 months under good conditions, 12-18 inches per year. Can eventually reach 6-10 feet with proper support.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Monthly during spring and summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer or one formulated for blooming plants. Skip fertilizer in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though ingestion may cause mild stomach upset. The sap can occasionally cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This Hoya shines in spaces with good natural light. Try it near an east or west-facing window in your living room, bedroom, or home office where it can trail from a shelf or climb a small trellis. Bathrooms with windows are excellent choices due to the higher humidity. It also works beautifully in hanging planters where the vines can cascade down. Avoid dark corners, cold drafty areas near exterior doors, and spots with direct hot afternoon sun which can burn the variegated portions of the leaves.
