Hoya Pubicalyx 'Pink Silver Ghost'
🌿 The Hoya pubicalyx 'Pink Silver Ghost' is a vining tropical houseplant from the Apocynaceae family, originally native to the Philippines. This intermediate-level plant features stunning silvery-speckled foliage and clusters of fragrant star-shaped flowers that appear throughout the growing season. In its natural habitat, it grows as an epiphyte, climbing trees in warm, humid forests. Here's something cool: the waxy flowers can last for weeks and produce sweet nectar droplets that shimmer like tiny jewels in the right light.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This hoya grows as a trailing or climbing vine that can reach several feet in length when mature. The leaves are elongated and lance-shaped, typically growing three to five inches long. Each leaf displays a deep green base generously splashed with silvery-grey speckling that catches the light beautifully. The foliage has a semi-succulent, waxy texture that feels slightly thick and leathery to the touch, helping the plant retain moisture between waterings.
FLOWER DETAILS
The blooms emerge in rounded clusters called umbels, with each cluster containing fifteen to twenty individual flowers. Each star-shaped flower shows off deep burgundy to pink-red petals with a lighter pink centre, creating a stunning two-tone effect. The flowers release a sweet, honey-like fragrance that intensifies during evening hours, filling the room with their pleasant scent. These blooms can last two to three weeks per cluster and often reappear from the same flowering spurs, so never remove the dried flower stems. To encourage blooming, provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to become slightly rootbound, and reduce watering slightly during cooler months to mimic its natural dormancy period.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6-8 hours daily. Can tolerate some direct morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays
- 💧 Water: Water when top two inches of soil are dry, roughly every 7-10 days in summer and every 14 days in winter. Bottom watering works well to avoid wetting the leaves
- 🌡️ Humidity: Thrives in 40-60% humidity but adapts to average home conditions
- 🪴 Soil: Well-draining chunky mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir
- 🏺 Potting: Terracotta or plastic pots with drainage holes, 4-6 inches for starter plants. Repot every 2-3 years or when severely rootbound
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower, adding 6-12 inches over six months and 1-2 feet per year. Can reach 6-10 feet in length at maturity
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly spring through summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer. Skip feeding in fall and winter
- 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, causing vomiting, drooling, and digestive upset due to cardiac glycosides in the sap
WHERE TO PUT IT
This hoya works beautifully in living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices where it can trail from a hanging basket or climb a small trellis near a bright window. It does well on plant shelves or in macramé hangers positioned a few feet from east or west-facing windows. Avoid placing it in dark corners, bathrooms with no natural light, or directly beside heating vents and air conditioners that create temperature fluctuations and dry air.
