Hoya Pubicalyx red dragon

Hoya Pubicalyx 'Red Dragon'

🌿 The Hoya pubicalyx 'Red Dragon' is a stunning vining tropical from the Apocynaceae family, native to the Philippines where it grows as an epiphyte in humid forests. This cultivar stands out with its dramatic dark foliage and clusters of fragrant star-shaped flowers. It's an intermediate-level plant that rewards patient growers with incredible blooms. Fun fact: the waxy flowers produce sweet nectar droplets that attract pollinators in nature, and they'll do the same indoors if you're lucky enough to see them bloom.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This is a vining plant that loves to climb or trail, depending on how you train it. The leaves are elongated and slightly curved, with a leathery texture that feels substantial to the touch. New growth emerges with a burgundy-red tint before maturing to deep green with silvery speckles scattered across the surface. Under bright light, the stems and leaf undersides take on a reddish-purple hue that gives this cultivar its dragon nickname.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers are the real showstopper here. They appear in rounded clusters called umbels, with each star-shaped bloom featuring deep burgundy to almost black petals and a lighter pink center. The fragrance is sweet and most intense in the evening, filling a room with a honey-like scent. Once a flowering spur develops, it'll rebloom from the same spot season after season, so never cut off those bare stems. To encourage flowering, give it bright indirect light, let it get slightly rootbound, and keep conditions consistent. Blooms typically appear in spring through fall when the plant is mature and happy.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6-8 hours daily. Can tolerate some morning sun but protect from harsh afternoon rays. Too little light means no flowers.
  • 💧 Water: Let the soil dry out almost completely between waterings. Water deeply when you do water, allowing excess to drain. In winter, cut back to once every 2-3 weeks. Bottom watering works great to avoid getting the leaves wet.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 40-60% humidity but adapts to average home conditions. Higher humidity encourages faster growth and more reliable flowering.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining chunky mix. Use orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir in equal parts. Needs air around the roots.
  • 🏺 Potting: Terracotta or plastic pot with drainage holes. Keep it slightly snug—hoyas bloom better when rootbound. Repot only every 2-3 years or when roots are bursting out.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower. Expect 15-30 cm of new growth in the first year under good conditions. Can eventually reach 1.5-3 meters in length if left to climb.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly spring through summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer or one formulated for blooming plants. Skip fertilizer in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Contains toxic compounds that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and drooling in cats and dogs if ingested. Keep out of reach of curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This hoya works beautifully in a bright living room near an east or west-facing window, or in a bedroom where you can enjoy the evening fragrance when it blooms. It looks stunning in a hanging basket where the vines can cascade down, or trained up a small trellis or moss pole. Avoid placing it in low-light bathrooms or dark corners—it won't thrive or flower without adequate brightness. Keep it away from cold drafts, heating vents, and areas where pets can nibble on the leaves.
