Hoya hanhiae

Hoya hanhiae

🌿 Meet the Hoya hanhiae, a rare gem from the Philippines that collectors dream about. This species belongs to the Apocynaceae family and grows as an epiphyte in its natural rainforest habitat, clinging to tree branches in filtered light. It's an intermediate-level plant that rewards patient growers with stunning blooms and unique foliage. Here's a fun fact: Hoya hanhiae was only formally described in 2013, making it one of the newer additions to the Hoya genus, which explains why it's still quite hard to find in regular nurseries.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This hoya has a vining growth habit that works beautifully in hanging baskets or climbing up a small trellis. The leaves are oval to slightly elongated, typically reaching about 5-8 centimetres in length. They're deep green with a semi-succulent texture that feels smooth and slightly waxy to the touch. Under the right conditions, you might notice subtle veining that adds character without being too bold or variegated.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers are where Hoya hanhiae really shines. Each umbel produces clusters of small, star-shaped blooms that range from creamy white to pale yellow with burgundy or dark red centres. They have a light, sweet fragrance that's most noticeable in the evening hours. The flowers are delicate and waxy, almost porcelain-like in appearance, which makes them incredibly photogenic. This hoya typically blooms once or twice a year when mature, usually in spring or summer. To encourage flowering, give it a cool rest period in winter with slightly reduced watering, and make sure it's getting enough bright indirect light throughout the year. Avoid moving the plant once buds form, as hoyas can be sensitive to changes during this stage.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal, with 4-6 hours daily. Can tolerate some morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays that can scorch leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 centimetres of soil feel dry. In spring and summer, this might be every 7-10 days. In fall and winter, reduce to every 2-3 weeks. Bottom watering works well to avoid water sitting on leaves.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity. Will tolerate average home humidity around 40%, but higher levels promote better growth and flowering.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining chunky mix. Combine orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss or coco coir. Soil should never stay soggy.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, slightly snug rather than oversized. Terracotta or plastic both work. Repot every 2-3 years or when roots fill the pot, as hoyas like being a bit rootbound.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to slow. Expect 15-30 centimetres of new growth in the first year under good conditions. Mature vines can reach 1-2 metres over several years.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter when growth slows.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoya hanhiae is mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. The sap can cause stomach upset, drooling, or vomiting. Keep out of reach of curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Hoya hanhiae does best in a bright bathroom where it can enjoy extra humidity, or near an east-facing window in a bedroom or living room. A spot on a plant shelf with grow lights also works if natural light is limited. You could hang it in a macramé planter or let it climb a small bamboo hoop. Avoid placing it in dark corners, cold drafty areas near exterior doors, or directly above heating vents where the air gets too dry.
