Hoya pubicalyx 'Royal Hawaiian Purple'
🌿 The Hoya pubicalyx 'Royal Hawaiian Purple' is a stunning vining tropical houseplant from the Apocynaceae family, native to the Philippines. This cultivar is beloved for its dark green, lance-shaped leaves splashed with silver flecks and its gorgeous clusters of star-shaped flowers that range from deep burgundy to almost black with pink centres. It's an intermediate-level plant, rewarding patient growers with dramatic blooms and vigorous growth. Fun fact: the nectar from its flowers is so fragrant and sweet that it can actually attract curious pets and create tiny droplets that look like morning dew on the leaves.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This hoya grows as a trailing or climbing vine, reaching several feet in length with proper support. The leaves are elongated and oval, typically three to five inches long, with a waxy, almost succulent-like texture. The foliage is deep green with irregular silvery or grayish speckles scattered across the surface, giving each leaf a unique, starry appearance. New growth emerges with a reddish tinge before maturing to the darker green base colour.
FLOWER DETAILS
The flowers appear in rounded clusters called umbels, each containing ten to thirty individual star-shaped blooms. The petals are a rich burgundy to deep maroon colour with contrasting pink or lighter centres, creating a stunning two-tone effect. They emit a strong, sweet fragrance that intensifies in the evening and can fill an entire room. The blooms have a glossy, almost waxy appearance that makes them look almost artificial in their perfection. This hoya can bloom multiple times throughout the year, especially during warmer months. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to become slightly root-bound, avoid moving it once buds form, and reduce watering slightly during cooler months to simulate its natural dry season.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal, with at least 4-6 hours daily. Can tolerate some direct morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays which can scorch leaves.
- 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top two inches of soil are dry, roughly every 7-10 days in summer and every 2-3 weeks in winter. Allow excess water to drain completely. Bottom watering works well to prevent crown rot.
- 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 40-60% humidity but adapts to average home conditions. Higher humidity encourages more vigorous growth and flowering.
- 🪴 Soil: Well-draining chunky mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Needs excellent aeration around roots.
- 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, slightly snug fit preferred. Terracotta or plastic both work. Repot every 2-3 years or when severely root-bound, as hoyas bloom better when roots are slightly crowded.
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to fast. Can grow 1-2 feet per year with proper care. Can reach 6-10 feet or more in length at maturity with support.
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly from spring through early fall with diluted balanced fertilizer or one formulated for flowering plants. Reduce or stop fertilizing in winter.
- 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, causing vomiting, drooling, and gastrointestinal upset due to cardiac glycosides present in all plant parts.
WHERE TO PUT IT
Place your Royal Hawaiian Purple in a bright living room, bedroom, or home office near an east or west-facing window where it can receive plenty of filtered light. It looks spectacular cascading from a hanging basket or climbing a trellis on a plant stand. The bathroom can work if it has adequate natural light and the added humidity will be appreciated. Avoid placing it in dimly lit corners, hallways without windows, or directly in front of heating or cooling vents which can cause stress and reduce flowering. Keep it away from high-traffic areas where the delicate vines might get damaged or where curious pets could nibble on the toxic foliage.
