Hoya Rotundiflora
🌿 Hoya rotundiflora is a delightful climbing species from the Apocynaceae family, native to the humid forests of Southeast Asia where it naturally grows as an epiphyte on trees. This charming hoya features rounded, fleshy leaves that give it a softer appearance compared to many of its relatives. It's considered an intermediate plant, meaning it asks for a bit more attention than your typical pothos but rewards you with clusters of sweetly scented, star-shaped flowers when conditions are right. Fun fact: the waxy blooms produce nectar droplets that glisten like tiny jewels, attracting pollinators in its native habitat and delighting collectors worldwide.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This hoya grows as a vining plant with a moderate climbing tendency, perfectly suited for a small trellis or allowed to trail from a hanging basket. The leaves are nearly circular to oval, thick and succulent in texture, with a smooth, glossy surface that reflects light beautifully. They emerge in a soft green colour and mature to a deeper, richer green. The foliage has a slightly cupped appearance, giving each leaf a three-dimensional quality that adds visual interest even when the plant isn't blooming.
FLOWER DETAILS
The flowers of Hoya rotundiflora are small, star-shaped blooms that appear in rounded clusters called umbels. Each flower is cream to pale yellow with a subtle pink or burgundy centre, creating a lovely two-toned effect. The fragrance is sweet and pronounced, especially in the evening hours, filling a room with a honeyed scent. The blooms have a waxy, almost porcelain-like texture that makes them look unreal. This hoya typically flowers once or twice a year when mature, usually in spring through summer. To encourage blooming, provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to become slightly rootbound, and maintain consistent care without moving it frequently once buds appear.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal, with at least 6-8 hours daily. Can tolerate some direct morning sun but protect from harsh afternoon rays
- 💧 Water: Allow the top half of soil to dry between waterings in growing season (spring-summer). Water every 10-14 days in summer, every 3-4 weeks in winter. Bottom watering works well to avoid wetting the crown
- 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home conditions of 40-50%
- 🪴 Soil: Chunky, well-draining mix with orchid bark, perlite, and some peat or coco coir. Must not stay soggy
- 🏺 Potting: Prefers to be slightly rootbound in a pot just 2-5 cm larger than root ball. Terracotta or plastic both work. Repot every 2-3 years only when severely rootbound
- 🌱 Growth rate: Slow to moderate, producing several new leaf pairs over 6 months. After one year, expect 15-30 cm of new growth. Can reach 1-2 metres in length over several years
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted liquid fertilizer (half strength). Skip fertilizing in fall and winter
- 🐾 Pet friendly: No, Hoya rotundiflora is considered toxic to cats and dogs. The sap can cause gastrointestinal upset if ingested, including vomiting and drooling
WHERE TO PUT IT
Hoya rotundiflora thrives in bright spaces like an east-facing window where it can catch gentle morning sun, or a few feet back from a south or west window. It's lovely in a bedroom where you can enjoy the evening fragrance when it blooms, or in a living room on a plant shelf with grow lights. A bathroom with a window can work well due to natural humidity. Avoid placing it in low-light corners, cold drafty areas near exterior doors, or directly on top of heating vents which will dry it out too quickly.
