Hoya schneei

Hoya schneei

🌿 Hoya schneei is a charming vining species in the Apocynaceae family, native to the Philippines where it thrives in humid tropical forests. This hoya features thick, succulent-like leaves and produces clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers that smell sweetest at night. It's well-suited for intermediate growers who appreciate plants that reward patience with stunning blooms. Fun fact: the flowers produce nectar droplets that can drip from the umbels, earning hoyas the nickname "wax plants" for their waxy, almost artificial-looking petals.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This hoya has a vining growth habit that works beautifully trailing from a hanging basket or climbing a small trellis. The leaves are oval to lance-shaped, thick and fleshy with a smooth, waxy surface. Foliage colour ranges from deep green to slightly grey-green depending on light exposure. The texture is rigid and succulent-like, storing moisture efficiently between waterings.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers emerge in rounded clusters called umbels, each bloom displaying creamy white to pale pink petals with a contrasting maroon or deep pink corona in the centre. They're star-shaped with five pointed petals and produce a sweet, honey-like fragrance that intensifies during evening hours. The blooms have a waxy, porcelain appearance that feels almost unreal to touch. Hoya schneei can flower multiple times per year once mature, typically from spring through autumn. To encourage blooming, provide bright indirect light, avoid moving the plant once flower buds form, and let it become slightly root-bound in its pot.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal, though it tolerates some morning sun. Aim for 6-8 hours of filtered light daily near an east or west window.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top half of soil feels dry, roughly every 10-14 days in summer and every 3-4 weeks in winter. Bottom watering works well to avoid wetting the leaves excessively.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home conditions around 40-50%.
  • 🪴 Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining mix with perlite, orchid bark, and peat or coco coir to prevent root rot.
  • 🏺 Potting: Grow in a small to medium terracotta or plastic pot with drainage holes. Hoyas prefer being slightly root-bound, so repot only every 2-3 years.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to slow. Expect 15-30 cm of new growth in the first year under good conditions. Mature vines can reach 1-2 metres over several years.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Skip fertilizing in autumn and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though ingestion may cause mild stomach upset. The sap can occasionally irritate sensitive skin.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Hoya schneei thrives in bright bathrooms where humidity is naturally higher, or in living rooms and bedrooms near east or west-facing windows with sheer curtains. It looks stunning in a macramé hanger or on a high shelf where the vines can cascade down. Avoid placing it in dark corners, near heating vents, or in rooms with poor air circulation, as these conditions can prevent blooming and encourage pests.
