Hoya Sigillatis 'Atlas River'
🌿 The Hoya sigillatis 'Atlas River' is a sought-after vining species from the Apocynaceae family, native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia where it grows as an epiphyte on trees. This intermediate-level plant produces distinctive foliage that sets it apart from other hoyas in cultivation. Fun fact: unlike many hoyas that bloom readily, H. sigillatis requires specific conditions to flower, making its blooms a rewarding achievement for dedicated growers.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This hoya displays a vining growth habit with stems that can extend several feet when provided with support. The leaves are elongated and lance-shaped, measuring around 8-12 cm in length, with a smooth, semi-succulent texture. Leaf colour ranges from deep green to olive-green with subtle veining that becomes more pronounced in bright light. The foliage has a waxy coating typical of hoyas, which helps the plant retain moisture.
FLOWER DETAILS
When mature and given the right conditions, Hoya sigillatis produces clusters of small, star-shaped flowers with five petals. The blooms are typically cream to pale yellow with reddish-brown centres, creating an attractive contrast. Each flower cluster contains 10-20 individual blooms that emit a light, sweet fragrance most noticeable in the evening. Flowering occurs sporadically throughout the year, usually in spring and summer, though it may take several years for a young plant to reach blooming maturity. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to become slightly rootbound, and maintain consistent care without frequent repotting.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6-8 hours daily. Can tolerate some direct morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays
- 💧 Water: Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry. Reduce watering in winter. Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom, then allow to dry slightly between waterings
- 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home humidity of 40-50%
- 🪴 Soil: Well-draining chunky mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Needs excellent aeration around roots
- 🏺 Potting: Use terracotta or plastic pots with drainage holes, 12-15 cm diameter to start. Repot every 2-3 years only when rootbound, as hoyas prefer being slightly pot-bound
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to slow. Expect 15-30 cm of new growth in the first year. Can reach 1-2 metres in length over several years with proper support
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer (10-10-10 or similar). Skip fertilizing in fall and winter
- 🐾 Pet friendly: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though mild stomach upset may occur if ingested in large amounts
WHERE TO PUT IT
This hoya thrives in bright spaces like east or west-facing windows in living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices. It works beautifully in a hanging basket or trained on a small trellis near a window. The vining nature makes it ideal for shelves where stems can cascade down or climb upward. Avoid placing it in low-light bathrooms, dark corners, or rooms without natural light, as insufficient light will prevent flowering and slow growth considerably.
