5.T. Hoya Thompsonii Purple

🌿 Hoya thomsonii 'Purple', commonly known as the Fuzzy Purple Wax Plant, belongs to the Apocynaceae family and traces its native lineage to the cool, high-elevation mountain forests of the Himalayas, including northern India, Tibet, Bhutan, and southwestern China. In its native alpine woodlands, it grows as an epiphytic climber on moss-covered trees. It is an intermediate to collector-level houseplant celebrated worldwide for its delightfully fuzzy leaves and exquisite ability to blush with deep violet sun-stress pigmentation.

FUN FACT

The parent species Hoya thomsonii has pubescent leaves that vary widely in size, with some silver flecks on many of them.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

Hoya thomsonii 'Purple' features slender, climbing or cascading stems densely clothed in charming, elliptic to ovate succulent leaves measuring 4 to 7 centimetres in length. Both the foliage surfaces and the vines are blanketed in a velvety coating of fine, silvery hairs that feel wonderfully soft to the touch. The leaves showcase scattered silver flecks and splashes that catch ambient light. Under bright filtered light, the foliage produces high concentrations of anthocyanin pigments, causing the leaf margins and young shoots to blush in stunning shades of deep plum, burgundy, and royal purple.

FLOWER DETAILS

During late autumn and winter, mature specimens produce rounded umbels of 10 to 25 porcelain-white to pale blush-pink star-shaped flowers. Each blossom features reflexed, fuzzy corolla lobes centered with an ivory-white corona displaying a charming red or golden dot at the hub. In this 'Purple' selection, the calyces and pedicels often exhibit rich purplish-bronze undertones. The blossoms emit an intense, sweet fragrance reminiscent of jasmine and gardenia, strongest in the evening. Retain all flower peduncles, as blooms emerge repeatedly from the same spurs.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Requires bright, indirect light for 6 to 8 hours daily. A couple of hours of gentle morning sunshine enhances the vibrant purple foliar blushing without overheating the fuzzy leaf tissues. Shield from harsh midday sun.
  • 💧 Water: Because it originates from cool Himalayan forests, Hoya thomsonii prefers slightly more even moisture than lowland desert succulents. Allow the top 2 to 3 centimetres to dry out before watering thoroughly, and reduce frequency in winter.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity between 55% and 75%. It adapts well to household conditions, but higher humidity maintains lush foliage and encourages robust autumn bud set.
  • 🪴 Soil: Plant in a light, free-draining epiphytic substrate consisting of fine orchid bark, perlite, pumice, peat moss, and horticultural charcoal to maintain airflow around root systems.
  • 🏺 Potting: Best suited for small hanging baskets or trellis containers with drainage holes. Hoyas flower much more freely when kept root-bound in smaller pots. Repot only every 2 to 3 years when necessary.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower. It establishes steadily during the warm season, filling out baskets with bushy, cascading stems before initiating autumn bloom cycles.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed every 3 to 4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, liquid tropical houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Taper off feeding during late autumn.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes. The ASPCA specifically lists wax plants (such as Hoya carnosa and Hoya kerrii) as non-toxic to cats and dogs, though Hoya thomsonii is not individually evaluated by the ASPCA database. As a member of the non-toxic Hoya genus, it is safe to keep around curious household pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Hoya thomsonii 'Purple' is ideal for hanging planters near an east- or west-facing window, or displayed on a bright office desk or living room shelf where its velvety texture and lovely fragrance can be enjoyed. Protect from cold winter drafts below 12°C and place away from dry, forced-air heating registers that can dehydrate fuzzy leaf surfaces.
