Hoya Verticilata Son La Splash 6446

🌿 Hoya verticillata 'Son La Splash' is a breathtaking geographic selection of the widespread Asian climbing wax plant in the Apocynaceae family, collected from the mountainous rainforests of Sơn La province in northwestern Vietnam. In its native tropical karst ecosystem, it grows as an epiphytic climber scaling tree trunks and limestone rocks under humid jungle canopies. It is an easy-care, beginner-to-intermediate houseplant celebrated for its heavily speckled foliage and fragrant, starry floral umbels.

FUN FACT

The parent species Hoya verticillata is a root climber that may also twine around objects, and all parts of the plant exude a white sap when broken.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

Hoya verticillata Son La Splash is renowned for its extraordinarily decorative foliage. The leaves are thick, succulent, and elliptical to broadly lanceolate, measuring approximately 8 to 12 centimetres in length and 4 to 6 centimetres in width, terminating in acute pointed tips. The base leaf blade is a rich, deep jade green that is lavishly painted with irregular, silvery-white splash variegation, flecks, and marbling caused by internal air pockets reflecting ambient light. The stems are sturdy and twining, climbing readily when provided with a moss pole, cedar trellis, or wire hoop, or trailing elegantly from an elevated plant pedestal.

FLOWER DETAILS

This variety blooms reliably during the late spring and summer months on established plants. It produces dense, rounded umbels bearing 25 to 40 reflexed star-shaped flowers with waxy, pale lime-cream to porcelain-white corollas centered with glistening star-shaped coronas that blush with soft pink or ruby-red eyes. The blossoms open in the evening and emit a delightful, clean fragrance blending notes of citrus blossoms, elderflower, and fresh honey. Old flower spurs (peduncles) should never be trimmed off, as they remain perennially fertile and generate new clusters of blooms year after year.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight for 6 to 8 hours each day. Adequate bright light is vital to encourage dense, brilliant silver splash patterning across new leaves. Shield strictly from intense direct midday summer sunshine.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly using the soak-and-dry method once the top half of the potting substrate has dried out completely. Empty drainage trays promptly so the container never sits in stagnant water, preventing root rot.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers moderate to high atmospheric humidity between 55% and 75%. While adaptable to average indoor household humidity (40% to 50%), higher humidity prevents leaf tip browning and accelerates new stem growth.
  • 🪴 Soil: Plant in a porous, airy epiphytic substrate formulated with equal parts coarse orchid bark chips, perlite, pumice, coconut coir chunks, and horticultural charcoal to ensure rapid drainage and ample root respiration.
  • 🏺 Potting: Select a container with adequate drainage holes. Like most Hoyas, it prefers to remain slightly root-bound in a snug pot, which prevents water retention and stimulates blooming. Repot only every 2 years in spring.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to fast climber during the warm growing season. Once settled onto a support, it rapidly shoots out vigorous leafless runner vines that subsequently leaf out and produce flower spurs.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed every 3 to 4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, liquid tropical houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Discontinue fertilizing throughout late autumn and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes. The ASPCA specifically lists wax plants (such as Hoya carnosa and Hoya kerrii) as non-toxic to cats and dogs, though Hoya verticillata is not individually evaluated by the ASPCA. The genus Hoya is widely documented as safe and non-toxic, making it an ideal choice for pet-loving households.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Hoya verticillata Son La Splash makes a stunning vertical centerpiece in bright living rooms, sunny bedrooms, and plant studios. Place it on an east-facing windowsill for gentle morning light, or 1 to 1.5 metres back from an unobstructed south- or west-facing window. Shield the plant from cold window drafts during freezing Canadian winters, and ensure it is placed away from active forced-air heating registers that rapidly dehydrate tropical foliage.
