Hoya Vangviengensis
🌿 The Hoya vangviengensis is a trailing tropical vine from the Apocynaceae family, native to the limestone karst regions of Laos. This intermediate-level houseplant thrives in bright, indirect light and rewards patient growers with clusters of fragrant flowers. In its natural habitat, it clings to rocky surfaces and tree bark, developing thick, succulent-like leaves that store water. Here's something interesting: this Hoya was only officially described in recent years, making it one of the newer additions to the ever-growing genus of wax plants.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This plant grows as a trailing or climbing vine, producing stems that can reach several feet in length when mature. The leaves are elongated and lance-shaped, with a smooth, waxy texture that reflects light. They emerge in a deep green colour with subtle silver flecking that becomes more pronounced as the foliage matures. Each leaf feels firm and slightly succulent to the touch, a trait that helps the plant survive periods of drought.
FLOWER DETAILS
The blooms appear in tight, rounded clusters called umbels, typically holding ten to twenty individual flowers. Each flower is star-shaped with a pale pink to white colour and a darker pink center. The fragrance is sweet and pronounced, especially in the evening hours, adding a layer of sensory appeal to any indoor space. Flowering occurs once or twice a year when the plant receives adequate light and has reached maturity. To encourage blooming, maintain consistent watering during the growing season, avoid repotting too frequently, and provide a trellis or support structure that allows the vine to climb naturally.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Bright, indirect light for 6 to 8 hours daily. Can tolerate some morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays.
- 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top two inches of soil feel dry. Reduce frequency in winter. Water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage.
- 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50 to 70 percent humidity but adapts to average household levels.
- 🪴 Soil: Well-draining mix with perlite, orchid bark, and peat or coco coir. Avoid heavy, moisture-retentive soils.
- 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, 4 to 6 inches in diameter for young plants. Terracotta or plastic both work well. Repot every two to three years or when roots emerge from drainage holes.
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate pace, adding 6 to 12 inches of vine length per year. Can reach 3 to 5 feet in length at maturity indoors.
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during spring and summer. Pause feeding in fall and winter.
- 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Contains compounds that can cause mild gastrointestinal upset if ingested by cats or dogs.
WHERE TO PUT IT
Place this Hoya in a living room, bedroom, or office where it can receive plenty of bright, filtered light near an east or west-facing window. It looks striking when trained on a small trellis or allowed to cascade from a hanging basket or high shelf. Avoid placing it in low-light bathrooms, dimly lit hallways, or near heating vents and air conditioning units that create temperature fluctuations.
