Hoya Verticilata heart leaves silver 6450

🌿 Hoya verticillata 'Heart Leaf Silver', commonly known as the Claret Hoya or Silver Heart Wax Plant (and historically cultivated under the botanical synonym Hoya parasitica), belongs to the dogbane family, Apocynaceae. The parent species is widely distributed across tropical rainforests of South and Southeast Asia, ranging from India and Bangladesh through Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. In its native jungle canopy, it grows as an epiphytic climber and twiner, anchoring itself to tree bark with adventitious aerial roots. It is considered an exceptional, collector-level houseplant, favored by hoya growers for its broad, cordate foliage adorned with shimmering silver splash, sturdy vining habit, and fragrant floral clusters.

FUN FACT

Botanical descriptions record that Hoya verticillata is a root climber but may also twine around objects, and all parts exude a white sap when broken.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

Hoya verticillata 'Heart Leaf Silver' develops thick, woody, twining vines that ascend vertical supports or trail gracefully over the sides of elevated planters. In domestic culture, stems typically reach 100 to 250 centimetres in length over several growing seasons. The foliage is arranged oppositely on stout, brownish-green petioles measuring 1 to 2 centimetres in length. Unlike the elongated lanceolate leaves of typical wild forms, this distinctive cultivar produces broad, thick, succulent leaves that are distinctly ovate to heart-shaped (cordate), measuring 6 to 11 centimetres in length and 4 to 7 centimetres in width, with an acute tip and a notched to rounded base. The upper leaf surface is a lustrous light emerald-green, overlaid with an extensive, frosted silver sheen and irregular metallic flecks that catch the light. Under strong, filtered illumination, the margins and silver flecks often blush with subtle rosy-pink or bronze undertones, while the leaf undersides remain smooth and pale green.

FLOWER DETAILS

Flowering takes place from late spring through early autumn on established, mature specimens. The inflorescence forms a compact, spherical to hemispherical umbel suspended on a persistent, woody peduncle measuring 2 to 4.5 centimetres long, bearing 20 to 40 tightly clustered blossoms. Each star-shaped flower measures approximately 1.2 to 1.5 centimetres across. The corolla lobes are waxy, reflexed along the edges, and ivory-white to pale cream, covered in a delicate, velvety puberulence. Rising from the center is a star-like corona that displays creamy-white lobes accented by a rich claret-red to pinkish-purple central star. The flowers open in the early evening and remain receptive for up to a week, exuding a sweet, citrus-spiced floral perfume that becomes particularly noticeable at dusk. Never remove spent flower peduncles, as fresh flower buds will emerge from the same spurs year after year.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Requires bright indirect sunlight for 5 to 7 hours daily. Gentle morning sunshine enhances the intensity of the foliar silver sheen and pink sun-blushing while driving regular seasonal flowering. Provide sheer curtain filtering during intense midday summer sun.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly using the soak-and-dry method once the top two-thirds of the potting substrate has dried out completely. Ensure all water drains away freely from the container bottom. Reduce watering frequency considerably in winter.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high indoor ambient humidity between 50% and 70%. It adjusts comfortably to typical household air, though higher humidity supports faster foliar expansion.
  • 🪴 Soil: Demands an airy, coarse, free-draining epiphytic mix formulated with 40% medium orchid bark, 25% coarse perlite, 15% pumice or volcanic grit, 10% coco husk chips, and 10% horticultural charcoal to maintain excellent root aeration.
  • 🏺 Potting: Best grown in a sturdy plastic nursery pot or unglazed terracotta container with ample drainage holes. Keeping the root ball moderately compact encourages healthier growth and earlier flowering.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to vigorous grower throughout spring and summer, actively producing climbing runners that quickly develop paired cordate leaves.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed every three weeks from April through September with a balanced, water-soluble orchid or houseplant fertilizer diluted to one-quarter strength. Withhold fertilizer throughout late autumn and winter.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Hoya verticillata 'Heart Leaf Silver' looks splendid when trained upward along a cedar plank, wire trellis, or moss pole placed near an east-facing window, or displayed on a bright living room shelf with generous ambient light. Maintain indoor room temperatures between 19°C and 27°C throughout the year, protecting the plant from chilly winter drafts below 14°C. Avoid placing the container directly adjacent to dry forced-air heating registers or air conditioners to prevent leaf stress.
