Hoya Verticillata Splash

Hoya Verticillata 'Splash'

🌿 Hoya verticillata 'Splash' is a tropical vining plant from the Apocynaceae family, native to Southeast Asia where it climbs through humid forest canopies. This intermediate-level houseplant appeals to collectors for its speckled foliage and fragrant blooms. The species name verticillata refers to the whorled arrangement of leaves in some varieties, though this cultivar displays alternate leaf patterns. Here's a fun fact: the waxy coating on Hoya leaves evolved as protection against moisture loss during dry spells, which is why they tolerate occasional neglect better than many other tropicals.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This climbing Hoya produces thick, succulent-like leaves covered in irregular silver splashes and speckles against a deep green background. Each leaf is oval to lanceolate in shape, measuring roughly 8-12 cm long, with a smooth, waxy texture that reflects light. The variegation pattern is random and unique on every leaf, ranging from fine flecks to bold patches. As the plant matures, it sends out long trailing or climbing stems that can be trained upward on a support or left to cascade from a hanging container.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers emerge in rounded clusters called umbels, each containing 10-20 individual star-shaped blooms. Petals are creamy white to pale pink with fuzzy red or maroon centres that glisten with nectar. The fragrance is strong and sweet, most noticeable during evening hours, filling a room with a honey-vanilla scent. Blooms typically appear once or twice a year on mature plants, usually in late spring through summer. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, avoid moving the plant once buds form, and allow the plant to become slightly rootbound. Keep the same flower stalks (peduncles) after blooms fade, as Hoyas produce new flowers from these same stems year after year.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light near an east or west window works best. Needs 6-8 hours of filtered light daily. Avoid direct afternoon sun which can scorch the leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Allow the top half of soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly once every 7-10 days in spring and summer, reducing to every 14-21 days in fall and winter. Bottom watering or soaking method prevents water from sitting in leaf axils where rot can start.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Thrives in 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home conditions around 40%. Boost humidity during winter heating season if leaf tips brown.
  • 🪴 Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Soil should dry relatively quickly to prevent root rot.
  • 🏺 Potting: Choose a pot with drainage holes, only 2-5 cm larger than the root ball. Terracotta helps wick away excess moisture. Repot every 2-3 years in spring, or when roots circle the pot.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to slow. Expect 15-30 cm of new growth in the first year under good conditions. Mature vines can reach 2-3 metres over several years.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Some growers use orchid fertilizer. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoya verticillata contains compounds that can cause mild gastrointestinal upset if ingested by cats or dogs, including vomiting and drooling.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Place this Hoya near an east-facing window in a living room, bedroom, or home office where it receives gentle morning sun. It also does well in bright bathrooms with higher humidity. Train the vines up a small trellis or moss pole for a vertical display, or let them spill from a hanging planter or high shelf. Avoid placing it in low-light corners, dark hallways, or next to heating vents and air conditioners that create temperature fluctuations and dry air.
