Hoya Wayetii 'Green'
🌿 Hoya wayetii 'Green' is a vigorous vining species from the Philippines, part of the Apocynaceae family. Known for its elongated, narrow leaves and cascading growth habit, this plant is excellent for beginners who want a tropical vine that grows reliably without demanding conditions. In its natural habitat, it thrives as an epiphyte in humid forests, clinging to trees and rocks. One fun fact: despite being called 'green,' the foliage can develop reddish tones along the leaf edges when exposed to bright light, adding unexpected colour to your collection.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This plant grows as a trailing or climbing vine with thin, flexible stems that can reach several feet in length over time. The leaves are elongated and lance-shaped, displaying a glossy deep green colour with subtle red margins that intensify under brighter conditions. The foliage has a smooth, waxy texture typical of hoyas, giving each leaf a polished appearance that catches the light beautifully.
FLOWER DETAILS
The flowers appear in small, rounded clusters and range from pale pink to burgundy, with a sweet, honey-like fragrance that becomes stronger in the evening. Each individual bloom is star-shaped with a fuzzy, almost velvety texture at the centre. The aesthetic appeal lies in the delicate contrast between the deep red centres and lighter outer petals. Flowering typically occurs once or twice a year, usually in late spring through summer. To encourage blooming, provide bright indirect light and avoid moving the plant once flower buds begin to form, as disturbance can cause bud drop.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal, though it tolerates some morning sun. Needs around 6 to 8 hours of filtered light daily for best growth and flowering.
- 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top half of the soil feels dry, roughly every 7 to 10 days in summer and every 2 weeks in winter. Bottom watering or soaking the root ball works well to ensure even moisture distribution.
- 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers humidity between 50% and 70%, though it adapts to average home levels around 40%.
- 🪴 Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining mix with perlite, orchid bark, and peat or coco coir to prevent root rot.
- 🏺 Potting: Choose a small to medium pot with drainage holes, preferably terracotta or plastic. Repot every 2 to 3 years, as hoyas prefer being slightly root-bound.
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to fast. Expect 6 to 12 inches of new growth over 6 months under good conditions, with mature vines reaching 6 feet or more within a few years.
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce or stop fertilizing in autumn and winter.
- 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoya wayetii is mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, potentially causing vomiting, drooling, or gastrointestinal upset due to the milky sap.
WHERE TO PUT IT
This hoya works beautifully in a hanging planter near an east or west-facing window, or trained up a small trellis in a living room or bedroom. It also thrives in bright bathrooms where humidity levels are naturally higher. Avoid placing it in low-light corners, north-facing windows without supplemental light, or rooms with cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C, as these conditions slow growth and increase the risk of root issues.
