3.1. Jasmine plant (Jasminum nitidum or angel wing)

🌿 Jasmine Plant (scientifically classified as Jasminum nitidum, with taxonomic synonym Jasminum laurifolium f. nitidum), commonly known as Angel Wing Jasmine, Windmill Jasmine, or Shining Jasmine, is a delightful evergreen flowering shrub in the Oleaceae family. Indigenous to the Admiralty Islands of Papua New Guinea in the Bismarck Archipelago, it flourishes as a scrambling woody shrub or twining climber in tropical lowland environments. It is an easy-to-care-for, beginner-friendly flowering houseplant renowned for its glossy leaves and intoxicatingly fragrant pinwheel-shaped white blossoms.

FUN FACT

Within the United States, this plant is cultivated in Florida and California and has various aliases, including Angel-Wing Jasmine, Angel-Hair Jasmine, Windmill Jasmine, Star Jasmine, and Confederate Jasmine.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

Jasminum nitidum features an arching, semi-vining growth habit characterized by slender, wiry woody stems that can be trained up a small trellis or pruned into a compact, rounded bush. The leaves are elliptical to lanceolate, measuring 5 to 8 centimetres in length, arranged in opposite pairs along the stems. They are smooth, thick, and leathery, displaying a deep emerald-green coloration with an extraordinary, mirror-like surface gloss that reflects ambient room light. The glossy foliage provides year-round visual appeal even when the plant is between blooming flushes, making it an elegant, clean-lined botanical accent.

FLOWER DETAILS

Throughout spring and summer, Angel Wing Jasmine produces prolific clusters of elegant, star-shaped blossoms measuring 3 to 5 centimetres across. The flower buds emerge in deep, alluring shades of purplish-pink and magenta before unfurling into pure, snow-white petals with narrow, radiating lobes that resemble windmills or angel wings. As dusk falls, the open blossoms release a heavenly, sweet perfume reminiscent of classic Arabian jasmine and fresh gardenias, scenting the entire living space. Regular pruning of spent flower clusters encourages continuous flower bud production throughout the warm season.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Prefers bright indirect light with 4 to 6 hours of gentle direct sun daily. An east- or west-facing window is ideal; ample bright light is required to stimulate heavy, continuous flowering.
  • 💧 Water: Keep the soil consistently and lightly moist during the warm growing season, watering when the top 2.5 centimetres dry out. Reduce watering frequency in winter, allowing the upper third of the soil to dry between waterings.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Enjoys moderate to high humidity between 50% and 70%. In dry winter heating conditions, mist foliage regularly, run an indoor humidifier, or place the pot over a pebble tray with water.
  • 🪴 Soil: Thrives in a rich, porous, slightly acidic potting mixture consisting of quality potting soil, peat moss or coco coir, perlite, and composted bark to balance moisture retention with sharp drainage.
  • 🏺 Potting: Select a container with drainage holes that allows room for root growth. Pair with a bamboo hoop or trellis if you prefer a climbing form. Repot every 1 to 2 years in spring into a pot 3 to 5 centimetres larger.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to fast grower during spring and summer. With adequate light and regular feeding, it produces vigorous new stems and flower clusters throughout the warm months.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed every 2 to 3 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertilizer or a bloom-boosting formula diluted to half strength. Discontinue fertilizing in autumn and winter.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Angel Wing Jasmine is ideal for sunlit living rooms, sunny breakfast nooks, home office window ledges, and bedrooms where its delightful evening fragrance can be enjoyed. Position it on a windowsill facing east or west, or set it slightly back from an unobstructed south-facing window. Shield the plant from cold winter window drafts below 12°C and keep it clear of hot air registers that can dry out flower buds before they unfurl.
