Living Stones, Pebble Plants Lithops

Living Stones, Pebble Plants (Lithops)

SKU: 6517

🌿 Living Stones, scientifically known as Lithops, are small succulent plants from the Aizoaceae family that have mastered the art of survival in the harshest deserts of southern Africa. These extraordinary plants mimic the appearance of smooth pebbles and stones, blending perfectly into their rocky surroundings to avoid being eaten by animals. They're ideal for intermediate gardeners who appreciate unusual plants with minimal care needs. Fun fact: each Lithops plant consists of just two fused leaves with a gap down the middle where a single daisy-like flower emerges once a year.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

Lithops grow as compact, ground-hugging rosettes that rarely exceed 1-2 inches in height. The paired leaves are thick, fleshy, and come in shades of grey, brown, cream, pink, and green, often with intricate patterns, dots, or translucent windows on their flat tops. The texture is smooth and stone-like, giving them their common name. These plants grow extremely slowly and maintain their miniature size throughout their life, making them perfect for small spaces and collections.

FLOWER DETAILS

Lithops produce cheerful daisy-like flowers in white or yellow that emerge from the fissure between the two leaves, typically in late summer or autumn. The blooms are relatively large compared to the plant's small size and sometimes carry a faint, sweet fragrance. Each flower lasts several days and adds a delightful surprise to what otherwise looks like a collection of decorative stones. To encourage flowering, provide bright light year-round and follow the plant's natural dormancy cycle by withholding water during summer months. Mature plants that receive proper care and adequate rest periods will bloom reliably each year.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright direct sunlight for 4-6 hours daily. Place in the sunniest window available, preferably south-facing
  • 💧 Water: Water sparingly from autumn to spring when leaves are plump. Completely withhold water in summer when old leaves shrivel. Water only when soil is bone dry. Bottom watering works best to avoid getting water on the plant body
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers low humidity, 20-40%. Thrives in typical dry indoor conditions
  • 🪴 Soil: Extremely well-draining mix with at least 70% mineral content. Use cactus mix amended with extra perlite, pumice, or coarse sand
  • 🏺 Potting: Shallow terracotta or ceramic pots with drainage holes, 2-3 inches deep. Repot every 3-4 years in early autumn. Lithops have minimal root systems
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Extremely slow. May show no visible change for months. Reaches maximum size of 1-2 inches after several years. Produces new leaf pairs annually while old leaves shrivel
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Rarely needed. If desired, apply diluted cactus fertilizer once in early autumn at quarter strength
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes, Lithops are non-toxic to cats and dogs and safe for homes with curious pets

WHERE TO PUT IT

Place Lithops on bright, sunny windowsills, particularly south or west-facing windows where they'll receive direct sun for most of the day. They work beautifully in minimalist arrangements, rock gardens, or displayed in shallow dishes with other small succulents. These plants are perfect for desks, shelves in bright rooms, or windowsill collections. Avoid placing them in low-light areas, humid bathrooms, or rooms without access to direct sunlight, as they will etiolate and lose their compact form.
