Mammillaria matudae

SKU: 7004

🌿 Mammillaria matudae, commonly known as Thumb Cactus, is a small globular cactus belonging to the family Cactaceae. Native to the mountainous regions of Oaxaca, Mexico, this species grows in rocky limestone soils at elevations between 1,800 and 2,400 metres. In its natural habitat, it forms tight clusters nestled among stones, where it endures seasonal droughts and cool nights. This cactus is suitable for intermediate growers who appreciate slow-growing succulents with reliable flowering habits. Here's something you might not know: Mammillaria matudae can live for several decades and actually flowers more prolifically as it matures and forms multiple heads.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This cactus grows in a compact, rounded shape that slowly offsets to form small clumps over time. The body is covered with dense white radial spines that create a soft, fuzzy appearance from a distance, though the central spines are darker and more rigid. The tubercles are arranged in neat spiral patterns, giving the plant a geometric, architectural quality. The texture is firm and the overall colour is blue-green beneath the white spination, creating a striking contrast that catches light beautifully.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers emerge in a ring around the crown of the plant during late winter to early spring. They are small, tubular blooms in shades of bright pink to magenta with slightly recurved petals. The flowers have no fragrance but their vibrant colour against the white spines is quite eye-catching. Mammillaria matudae blooms reliably once it reaches maturity, typically after three to four years. To encourage flowering, provide a cool, dry winter rest period with reduced watering and ensure the plant receives plenty of bright light during the growing season. Multiple flowers can appear simultaneously, creating a cheerful crown effect.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright direct sunlight for 4-6 hours daily. Tolerates partial sun but flowers best with maximum light exposure.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when soil is completely dry during spring and summer. Reduce to minimal watering in winter (once monthly or less). Water at the soil level, never overhead. Allow pot to drain completely.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers low humidity between 20-40%. Thrives in typical dry indoor conditions.
  • 🪴 Soil: Fast-draining cactus mix with added pumice or perlite. Gritty, mineral-heavy substrate prevents root rot.
  • 🏺 Potting: Shallow terracotta or clay pot with drainage holes. Repot every 3-4 years in early spring. Choose pot only slightly larger than root mass.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Very slow. Adds 1-2 cm per year. Reaches 8-10 cm diameter at maturity after 8-10 years. May eventually form clusters 15-20 cm wide.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Apply diluted cactus fertilizer monthly during spring and summer only. Skip fertilizer entirely in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes. Non-toxic to cats and dogs, though the spines can cause physical injury if pets attempt to chew or paw at the plant.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Mammillaria matudae does best on south-facing windowsills, in bright sunrooms, or on covered outdoor patios during warm months. It thrives in offices with large windows, on plant shelves under grow lights, or in minimalist spaces where its sculptural form can be appreciated up close. Avoid placing it in humid bathrooms, dark corners, low-light hallways, or anywhere with poor air circulation. Keep away from areas where pets or children might accidentally brush against the spines.
