Mammillaria crucigera subsp. tlalocii f. caespitosa
🌿 The Mammillaria crucigera subsp. tlalocii f. caespitosa, commonly known as the Cross-Bearing Pincushion Cactus, belongs to the Cactaceae family and hails from the rocky limestone slopes of central Mexico. This clustering form develops multiple small heads over time, creating a dense mat of tiny barrel-shaped bodies covered in intricate cross-patterned spines. It's a beginner-friendly cactus that rewards minimal effort with maximum charm. Fun fact: the subspecies name "tlalocii" honours Tlaloc, the ancient Aztec god of rain, despite this plant thriving in drought conditions.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This cactus grows in a clustering, mounding habit, sending out offsets that form tight colonies. Each head is cylindrical to globular, typically reaching 3-5 cm in diameter. The body is green to blue-green, completely obscured by dense white radial spines arranged in neat cross patterns. The spines are stiff yet delicate-looking, creating a soft visual texture that contrasts with the plant's hardy nature.
FLOWER DETAILS
The flowers emerge in a ring around each head during late winter to early spring. They're small but numerous, typically pink to magenta with deeper pink central stripes. The blooms have no fragrance but offer delicate, papery petals that catch the light beautifully. Each flower lasts several days, and the display can continue for weeks when the plant is mature and happy. To encourage flowering, provide a cool, dry rest period in winter with temperatures around 10-15°C and withhold water completely from November through February.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Full sun to bright indirect light. Needs at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily, though can tolerate bright shade in summer heat
- 💧 Water: Spring through fall: water thoroughly when soil is completely dry, roughly every 10-14 days. Winter: no water from November to February. Always water at the soil level, never overhead
- 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers low humidity, 20-40% ideal. Tolerates average home conditions but avoid humid bathrooms
- 🪴 Soil: Extremely well-draining cactus mix with 60-70% grit (perlite, pumice, coarse sand). Must dry out quickly
- 🏺 Potting: Shallow terracotta or unglazed clay pot, 1-2 cm wider than plant cluster. Repot every 2-3 years in spring only when rootbound
- 🌱 Growth rate: Slow. Adds 1-2 new heads per year. Over 1 year, expect modest spread of 2-3 cm. Mature colonies can reach 15-20 cm across after 5-7 years
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: March through September only, once monthly with diluted cactus fertilizer at half strength. Never fertilize in winter dormancy
- 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes, non-toxic to cats and dogs, though the spines can cause physical injury if touched or ingested
WHERE TO PUT IT
This cactus thrives on sunny windowsills, particularly south or west-facing windows where it receives strong direct light. It's perfect for desks, shelves, and bright office spaces. Works beautifully in cactus dish gardens or grouped with other small cacti. Avoid placing in bathrooms, kitchens, or any humid room. Keep away from cold drafts near exterior doors in winter, and don't position where it might be accidentally knocked or brushed against due to the spines.
