Medusa Head (Euphorbia caput-medusae) 7710

SKU: 7710

🌿 The Medusa Head, scientifically known as Euphorbia caput-medusae, is a striking succulent from the Euphorbiaceae family. Native to South Africa's rocky coastal regions, this plant has adapted to thrive in arid conditions with minimal water. Its unusual growth pattern and sculptural appearance make it an intermediate-level plant that rewards attentive care. Here's a fun fact: the plant earned its common name because its serpentine arms radiating from a central head reminded botanists of the Greek mythological figure Medusa, whose hair was made of snakes.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This succulent displays a unique medusoid growth habit, with thick, snake-like arms that radiate outward from a central caudex or stem base. The cylindrical branches are grey-green to blue-green in colour, covered with small tubercles that give them a bumpy, reptilian texture. As the plant matures, the arms sprawl and cascade, creating a dramatic sculptural effect that works beautifully in containers.

FLOWER DETAILS

Medusa Head produces small, cyathia-type flowers that appear at the tips of the arms during late winter to early spring. The flowers are yellow-green in colour with a cup-like shape, surrounded by modified leaves called bracts. While not particularly fragrant, these blooms add a subtle charm to the plant's already exotic appearance. Flowering occurs once yearly under proper conditions. To encourage blooming, provide the plant with a cool, dry rest period during winter months, reducing water significantly and ensuring bright light exposure.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light to full sun. Needs 6-8 hours of bright light daily. Can tolerate some direct morning sun but protect from intense afternoon rays indoors.
  • 💧 Water: Water sparingly in spring and summer when soil is completely dry, approximately every 2-3 weeks. Reduce to once monthly in fall and barely at all in winter. Use the soak-and-dry method, allowing water to drain completely.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Low humidity preferred, 30-40% ideal. Thrives in average dry household conditions.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Add extra perlite or coarse sand for improved drainage.
  • 🏺 Potting: Shallow, wide terracotta or ceramic pots with drainage holes work best. Choose a pot 1-2 inches wider than the plant's base. Repot every 2-3 years in spring.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow growing. Expect 2-4 inches of arm extension per year. Can reach 12-18 inches wide at maturity after several years.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed once in spring with diluted cactus fertilizer at half strength. No fertilizing needed in fall or winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Contains toxic white latex sap that can cause skin irritation and is harmful if ingested by pets or humans. Handle with gloves and keep away from children and animals.

WHERE TO PUT IT

The Medusa Head thrives in bright locations like south or west-facing windowsills, sunny offices, or covered patios during warm months. Its architectural form makes it an excellent accent piece for modern minimalist spaces, entryways, or display shelves where it can be admired from multiple angles. Avoid placing it in low-light bathrooms, dimly lit corners, or high-traffic areas where children or pets might come into contact with its toxic sap.
