Monstera Burle Max Flame

Monstera 'Burle Marx Flame'

The Monstera 'Burle Marx Flame' (Monstera burle-marxii 'Flame', family Araceae) is a compact climbing aroid from the rainforests of Central and South America. Unlike its giant cousins, this variety stays relatively small and manageable, making it ideal for beginners who want something unusual without the commitment of a massive plant. The 'Flame' refers to the striking orange-red new growth that emerges before maturing to deep green—it's like watching tiny fireworks unfold in your living room. Here's a fun fact: this cultivar is named after Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, who was famous for incorporating native plants into his modernist designs and had one of the world's largest private collections of tropical species.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This monstera has a compact climbing habit, though it can also trail if you let it. The leaves are elongated and heart-shaped, much narrower than the typical monstera you see everywhere. They emerge in shades of fiery orange or coral, then transition through bronze before settling into a rich, glossy green. The texture is smooth and slightly waxy, which gives them a polished look even when they're not brand new.

FLOWER DETAILS

Like most monsteras, the Burle Marx Flame can produce a spadix-type flower—a cream-coloured spike surrounded by a white spathe. It's not showy or fragrant, and honestly, most people grow this plant for the foliage, not the blooms. Flowering is rare indoors and usually only happens in mature plants with ideal conditions. If you want to encourage it, give the plant bright indirect light, high humidity, and let it climb on a moss pole. But don't hold your breath—it's more about creating the right environment than forcing it.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is best. It can tolerate some morning sun, but avoid harsh afternoon rays that scorch the leaves. Aim for 6-8 hours of filtered light daily.
  • 💧 Water: Water when the top 5 cm of soil feels dry. In spring and summer, that's usually once a week. In winter, stretch it to every 10-14 days. Bottom watering works well to encourage deep roots.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 60-80% humidity. It'll survive in average home conditions (40-50%), but higher humidity keeps the leaves vibrant and reduces crispy edges.
  • 🪴 Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining mix—think orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. It needs airflow around the roots.
  • 🏺 Potting: A terracotta or nursery pot with drainage holes works great. Repot every 1-2 years in spring, going up one pot size. It likes being slightly snug.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate. Expect 3-5 new leaves over 6 months in good conditions. In a year, it might grow 30-45 cm. Mature size indoors is around 60-90 cm tall if climbing.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly from spring through summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Contains calcium oxalate crystals, which are toxic to cats and dogs. Can cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing if ingested.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This plant does well in a bright living room, home office, or bedroom with a nearby window. It loves a spot where it can climb up a moss pole or trellis, but it also looks great cascading from a shelf. Avoid placing it in dim corners, drafty hallways, or right next to heating vents and air conditioners. Keep it away from pets and small children because of its toxicity.
