Monstera obliqua 'Peru'

Monstera obliqua 'Peru'

SKU: 7316

🌿 The Monstera obliqua 'Peru' is one of the rarest houseplants you'll ever encounter, belonging to the Araceae family and hailing from the cloud forests of Peru. This delicate climber is known for its extraordinary fenestrations—holes that can occupy up to 90% of the leaf surface, making each leaf look more hole than plant. Unlike its robust cousin Monstera adansonii, this species grows slowly and demands careful attention, making it suitable only for advanced plant collectors. Here's something incredible: in nature, this plant has evolved such extreme leaf perforations that scientists believe it's an adaptation to allow wind and rain to pass through without tearing the fragile tissue.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This vining beauty climbs naturally using aerial roots, though it grows at a glacial pace compared to most aroids. The leaves are paper-thin, almost translucent, with an irregular pattern of oblong holes that give each one a lacy, skeletal appearance. Leaf colour ranges from soft green to silvery-green depending on light conditions. The texture is delicate and easily damaged, so this isn't a plant you can casually brush past or handle often.

FLOWER DETAILS

Flowering is extremely rare in cultivation, but when it does happen, you'll see a small cream-coloured spathe typical of aroids. There's no notable fragrance, and honestly, most growers never see blooms because the plant puts all its energy into those incredible leaves. The aesthetic value lies entirely in the foliage. If you want flowers, this isn't your plant—but if you want something that looks like nature decided to play with scissors, you're in the right place.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light, 10-12 hours daily. No direct sun—those thin leaves burn instantly
  • 💧 Water: Keep substrate lightly moist year-round but never soggy. Water when top 2cm feels dry. Use lukewarm water only
  • 🌡️ Humidity: 80-90% minimum. You'll need a greenhouse cabinet or terrarium—regular room humidity won't cut it
  • 🪴 Soil: Extremely chunky, fast-draining mix with orchid bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss
  • 🏺 Potting: Small terracotta or net pots, shallow depth. Repot only every 2-3 years—roots grow slowly
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Painfully slow. Expect 2-4 leaves per year. May reach 30-40cm after several years
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Quarter-strength liquid fertilizer monthly during spring and summer only. Less is more
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Toxic to cats and dogs due to calcium oxalate crystals causing oral irritation and drooling

WHERE TO PUT IT

This plant belongs in a controlled environment—think display terrarium, greenhouse cabinet, or dedicated plant room with humidity control. It's not suited for open living spaces, bedrooms, or offices unless you have serious climate control equipment. Avoid anywhere with temperature fluctuations, drafts, or dry air. Keep it away from heating vents, air conditioners, and windows where temperature swings happen.
