Monstera Peru Green

SKU: 7332

🌿 The Monstera Peru, scientifically known as Monstera karstenianum, is a member of the Araceae family and originates from the rainforests of Central and South America, where it climbs trees in dappled light. Unlike its fenestrated cousins, this species keeps its leaves intact, displaying a unique pebbled texture that feels almost leathery to the touch. It's an intermediate-level plant, requiring a bit more attention to humidity and support than your average pothos. Here's something interesting: the deep grooves between the leaf veins are thought to help channel water directly to the roots in its natural habitat, making every raindrop count.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This plant has a climbing growth habit and will happily ascend a moss pole or trellis if given the chance. The leaves are oval to elongated, small to medium in size, and emerge a bright green before deepening as they mature. Each leaf has a distinctive quilted or puckered surface, with veins that sink into the leaf, creating that signature bumpy texture. The foliage is thick and rigid, with a slight sheen that catches the light beautifully.

FLOWER DETAILS

In cultivation, Monstera Peru rarely flowers indoors, but when it does, it produces a small, cream-coloured spathe and spadix typical of aroids. The flowers have no notable fragrance and aren't particularly showy, so this plant is grown almost exclusively for its foliage. If you're hoping to see blooms, you'd need to replicate near-perfect rainforest conditions—high humidity, warmth, and bright indirect light year-round. Even then, flowering is a rare event, so it's best to appreciate this one for its leaves.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal, with 6 to 8 hours daily. It can tolerate lower light but growth will slow, and the leaves may lose some of their texture definition.
  • 💧 Water: Water when the top 5 cm of soil feels dry, usually every 7 to 10 days in spring and summer, and every 10 to 14 days in fall and winter. Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom, and avoid letting it sit in standing water.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 60 to 70% humidity. It will tolerate average home levels around 40 to 50%, but leaf edges may brown slightly without added moisture.
  • 🪴 Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Good aeration is key to prevent root rot.
  • 🏺 Potting: Choose a pot with drainage holes, 15 to 20 cm in diameter for a young plant. Terracotta works well to wick away excess moisture. Repot every 18 to 24 months or when roots emerge from the drainage holes.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate. Expect 3 to 5 new leaves over six months under good conditions. In a year, it can grow 30 to 45 cm in height if climbing. Mature plants can reach 2 to 3 metres indoors with support.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly from spring through late summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter when growth naturally slows.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Monstera Peru is toxic to cats and dogs due to calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing if ingested.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This plant thrives in a living room or bedroom with a bright window that doesn't receive direct afternoon sun. It does well on a shelf or table near an east or north-facing window, or a few feet back from a south or west exposure. A bathroom with a window is also a great choice due to the naturally higher humidity. Avoid placing it in low-light hallways, basements, or corners far from windows, as it will struggle to grow and may develop leggy, sparse foliage. Keep it away from heating vents and cold drafts, which can stress the plant and cause leaf damage.
