SKU: 7612

🌿 The Pachypodium brevicaule, commonly called the Short-stem Pachypodium, is a rare succulent from the Apocynaceae family native to the rocky limestone plateaus of Madagascar. This remarkable plant grows naturally in harsh, arid conditions where it hugs the ground in a flattened rosette form. With its thick, swollen caudex and minimal vertical growth, it's considered an intermediate to advanced level plant due to its specific care requirements and slow growth rate. Fun fact: this species can survive months without water by storing moisture in its squat, bottle-shaped stem that resembles a small stone sculpture.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This plant forms a compact, low-growing rosette with a distinctive flattened caudex that rarely exceeds 15 centimetres in diameter. The grey-green leaves are narrow, elongated, and slightly fuzzy, emerging from the centre of the plant in a spiral arrangement. The texture of the caudex is rough and bark-like, giving it an ancient appearance despite its small size. During dormancy periods, it sheds its leaves completely, revealing the sculptural beauty of its stem.

FLOWER DETAILS

Pachypodium brevicaule produces stunning bright yellow flowers with five petals that bloom from the centre of the rosette. The flowers are trumpet-shaped and can reach up to 4 centimetres across, creating a striking contrast against the grey-green foliage. While not particularly fragrant, the blooms are visually captivating and appear in spring when the plant is actively growing. Flowering occurs annually in mature specimens, typically once proper dormancy and growing cycles are established. To encourage blooming, provide a distinct winter rest period with cooler temperatures and reduced watering, then resume normal care when spring arrives.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright, direct sunlight for 6-8 hours daily. Tolerates full sun outdoors in summer.
  • 💧 Water: Water sparingly during growing season (spring/summer) when soil is completely dry. Reduce to minimal or no water in winter dormancy. Water at base, never overhead.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Low humidity preferred, 20-40% ideal. Excellent for dry indoor environments.
  • 🪴 Soil: Very fast-draining mix: 70% mineral content (pumice, perlite, coarse sand) with 30% organic matter. Must not retain moisture.
  • 🏺 Potting: Shallow, wide terracotta or unglazed clay pot. Depth 8-12 cm, width 15-20 cm. Repot every 3-4 years in early spring.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Extremely slow. Grows 1-2 cm per year. Takes 5-10 years to reach mature size of 12-15 cm diameter.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during active growth (April-September) with diluted cactus fertilizer at half strength. No fertilizer during dormancy.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Contains toxic milky sap that can cause skin irritation and is harmful if ingested by pets or humans. Handle with gloves.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Place your Pachypodium brevicaule on a south-facing windowsill where it receives maximum direct sunlight throughout the day. It thrives in bright conservatories, sunny office spaces, or dedicated succulent display areas. During Canadian summers, it can be moved outdoors to a sheltered patio or balcony in full sun. Avoid bathrooms, kitchens, or any humid environments. Keep away from drafty windows in winter and ensure it's positioned where curious pets and children cannot access the toxic sap.
