Peperomia caperata ‘Burbella’

Peperomia caperata 'Burbella'

SKU: 6550

🌿 Peperomia caperata 'Burbella', commonly called the Ripple Peperomia, is a compact houseplant from the Piperaceae family. Native to the rainforests of Brazil, this small tropical species thrives in the humid understory where it grows close to the forest floor. With its deeply textured, heart-shaped leaves and easy-going nature, it's a favourite among beginner plant owners. Fun fact: the leaves are so corrugated they almost look like tiny green brains, giving the plant its quirky charm.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This peperomia grows in a compact, mounding habit, rarely exceeding 20 centimetres in height. The leaves emerge in a rosette pattern, each one deeply ridged and puckered with pronounced veins that create a rippled surface. They're a rich, dark green colour with a slightly glossy finish and a soft, fleshy texture that stores water efficiently. The overall effect is sculptural and ornamental, making it a standout even when not in bloom.

FLOWER DETAILS

Peperomia caperata 'Burbella' produces slender, upright flower spikes that resemble tiny white or cream-coloured tails rising above the foliage. The blooms have no fragrance but add vertical interest and contrast against the textured leaves. Flowering happens sporadically throughout the year, especially when the plant receives adequate light and consistent care. To encourage blooms, maintain bright indirect light and avoid overwatering, as stress from poor conditions can inhibit flowering.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal, though it tolerates lower light conditions. Aim for 6-8 hours of filtered light daily; avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Water when the top 3-5 centimetres of soil feel dry. In spring and summer, this may be weekly; in fall and winter, reduce to every 10-14 days. Bottom watering works well to prevent water sitting on the textured leaves.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-60% humidity but adapts to average home levels (40-50%). Avoid misting directly on leaves to prevent fungal issues.
  • 🪴 Soil: Use a well-draining, chunky mix with perlite or orchid bark. A blend designed for succulents or aroids works perfectly.
  • 🏺 Potting: Choose a shallow pot with drainage holes; ceramic or terracotta is ideal. Repot every 2-3 years or when roots become crowded, typically in spring.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow to moderate. Expect minimal growth in the first 6 months, then 5-8 centimetres per year. Mature size is usually 15-20 centimetres tall and wide.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter when growth slows.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes, Peperomia caperata is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safe choice for homes with pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This peperomia thrives on desks, shelves, or windowsills in living rooms, bedrooms, or offices where it receives gentle, filtered light. It's perfectly sized for small spaces like apartments or condos. Avoid placing it in bathrooms with high moisture and low light, or near heating vents and cold drafts, as extreme conditions can stress the plant and cause leaf drop.
