Black Billietiae

Philodendron billietiae 'Black'

SKU: 7326

🌿 The Philodendron billietiae 'Black' (Philodendron billietiae, family Araceae) is a stunning aroid native to the rainforests of French Guiana, Brazil, and Guyana, where it climbs tall trees in search of dappled light. This intermediate-level plant is celebrated for its dramatic dark foliage and vibrant orange petioles that create a striking contrast. Here's something special: in its natural habitat, this philodendron can climb over 30 feet up into the canopy, using its aerial roots to anchor itself to host trees as it reaches toward filtered sunlight.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This climbing philodendron displays an upright to vining growth habit, perfect for training up a moss pole or trellis. The leaves are elongated and lance-shaped, reaching impressive lengths of 2 to 3 feet at maturity. The foliage emerges in deep green tones that darken almost to black-green as they mature, with a smooth, slightly glossy texture. The real showstopper is the petioles—thick, sturdy stems that support each leaf in a brilliant orange to reddish-orange hue, creating a captivating visual contrast against the dark leaves.

FLOWER DETAILS

Like most aroids, Philodendron billietiae 'Black' produces a spadix and spathe inflorescence, though flowering is rare indoors. When it does bloom, the spathe is cream to pale green on the outside with a darker interior, and the spadix is typically white to cream-coloured. The flowers have a mild, somewhat sweet fragrance that's barely noticeable. While not grown for its blooms, flowering can occur in mature plants that receive consistent bright indirect light and high humidity. To encourage flowering, maintain stable growing conditions with temperatures between 18-27°C and humidity above 60 percent, though patience is key as indoor blooming remains uncommon.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal, though it tolerates medium light. Avoid direct sun which can scorch the leaves. Aim for 8-10 hours of filtered light daily.
  • 💧 Water: Water when the top 5 cm of soil feels dry, typically once a week in spring and summer, less in fall and winter. Use the soak-and-drain method, ensuring water flows through drainage holes.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 60-80% humidity but adapts to average home levels around 40-50%. Mist occasionally or use a humidifier during dry winter months.
  • 🪴 Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir for aeration and moisture retention.
  • 🏺 Potting: Plant in a pot with drainage holes, sizing up only when roots emerge from drainage holes. Terracotta or plastic pots work well. Repot every 2-3 years in spring.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to fast growth. Expect 3-5 new leaves over six months under ideal conditions, with mature plants reaching 4-6 feet indoors. Can grow larger with vertical support.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce to every 6-8 weeks in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Contains calcium oxalate crystals that are toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, causing oral irritation, drooling, and difficulty swallowing.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This philodendron thrives in living rooms, home offices, or bedrooms where it can receive bright filtered light from an east or west-facing window. It's perfect near a window with sheer curtains or placed a few feet back from a south-facing window. The climbing nature makes it ideal for corners where you can add a moss pole or trellis for vertical interest. Avoid placing it in dark hallways, windowless bathrooms, or right beside heating vents and air conditioners, which can cause stress from temperature fluctuations and low humidity.
