Philodendron plowmanii

SKU: 7338

🌿 The Philodendron plowmanii is a terrestrial species from the Araceae family, native to the humid lowland forests of Peru and Ecuador. This intermediate-care philodendron grows naturally along riverbanks and forest floors where it develops a compact, self-heading habit rather than climbing. Unlike many of its vining cousins, plowmanii stays relatively low and spreads outward with thick, waxy leaves that have a unique ruffled texture along the edges. It's a favourite among collectors for its silvery-grey veining and the way its petioles (leaf stems) develop a burgundy-pink blush as the plant matures. Here's a fun fact: the underside of the leaves often displays stunning purple tones, especially when grown in bright light, making it a true showstopper from every angle.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

Philodendron plowmanii has an upright, clumping growth habit that makes it perfect for tabletops or low shelves. The leaves emerge in a pale green colour and mature into a deeper forest green with prominent silver veining that creates a striking contrast. Each leaf is broadly heart-shaped with slightly ruffled or wavy margins that give the plant a textured, three-dimensional appearance. The foliage has a thick, almost leathery texture with a glossy sheen on top and that characteristic purple-burgundy colouring underneath. New leaves unfurl from a tight spiral and gradually flatten out, revealing their full beauty over several days.

FLOWER DETAILS

Like most philodendrons, plowmanii produces flowers in the form of a spadix and spathe, though flowering indoors is quite uncommon. When it does bloom, the spathe is a creamy white to pale green colour on the outside with a deep burgundy interior that matches the leaf undersides. The flowers have a subtle, sweet fragrance that's most noticeable in the evening hours. While the blooms aren't the main attraction, they add a special touch when they appear. Flowering typically happens in mature plants during warmer months when growing conditions are optimal. To encourage blooming, maintain consistent humidity above 60%, provide bright indirect light, and ensure the plant is well-established in its pot with regular feeding during the growing season.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6-8 hours daily. Tolerates medium light but grows slower. Avoid direct sun which scorches leaves and fades the purple undersides.
  • 💧 Water: Water when top 2-3 cm of soil dries out. Spring/summer: every 5-7 days. Fall/winter: every 10-14 days. Bottom watering works well to encourage deep root growth without wetting the crown.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 60-75% humidity. Tolerates average home humidity around 40-50% but leaf edges may brown. Use a humidifier or pebble tray in winter.
  • 🪴 Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix. Combine potting soil, orchid bark, perlite, and a bit of charcoal. Soil should dry slightly between waterings but retain some moisture.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, 15-20 cm diameter for young plants. Terracotta helps prevent overwatering. Repot every 2-3 years in spring when roots fill the pot.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower. Produces 3-5 new leaves over 6 months in ideal conditions. After one year, expect 8-12 leaves total. Mature plants reach 45-60 cm tall and 60-75 cm wide.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly from March through September with diluted balanced fertilizer (20-20-20) at half strength. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter when growth slows.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Contains calcium oxalate crystals that are toxic to cats and dogs. Ingestion causes mouth irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep out of reach of curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Philodendron plowmanii thrives in living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices where it can receive plenty of bright, filtered light near an east or west-facing window. It's an excellent choice for plant stands or side tables where its compact size and stunning foliage can be appreciated from above and below. Bathrooms with windows make ideal spots due to naturally higher humidity levels. The plant also does well in kitchens on counters away from the stove. Avoid placing it in dark corners, drafty hallways, or directly beside heating vents and air conditioners. Keep it away from south-facing windows with intense afternoon sun, and don't put it in rooms that get very cold at night or spaces with low air circulation where humidity can become stagnant.
