1.3. Philodendron Spiritus-sancti (PSS)

🌿 Philodendron spiritus-sancti belongs to the Araceae family and is endemic to Espírito Santo, Brazil. In its native habitat it grows as an epiphyte on trees. It is one of the rarest and most sought-after collector-level houseplants in the aroid world.

FUN FACT

This species was first scientifically described in 1987 from a single known location on private farmland, and for decades it was considered critically endangered in the wild. Remarkably, a 2024 survey discovered an entirely new wild population 128 km from the previously known site, with at least 50 well-developed plants and many seedlings — a rare bit of good news for a species long thought to survive mainly in private collections rather than nature.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

Mature plants develop long, narrow, undulating leaves with a distinctive silvery sheen, growing as a climbing epiphyte that attaches to tree trunks in its native habitat. Indoors, it grows slowly and is typically staked or trained up a moss pole.

FLOWER DETAILS

Like most Philodendrons, it produces an aroid inflorescence with a spathe and spadix, though flowering is uncommon in cultivation since the plant usually needs significant size and maturity first.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright, indirect light suits it best; direct sun should be avoided.
  • 💧 Water: Let the top layer of mix dry before watering again; yellow halos or soft spots on leaves are a sign of overly wet roots.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Appreciates 50 to 80% humidity, though it can acclimate to somewhat lower levels over time.
  • 🪴 Soil: A chunky, well-draining aroid mix suits its epiphytic roots.
  • 🏺 Potting: Provide a moss pole or similar support for climbing; repot carefully as it's a slow grower.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow, and growth essentially stops if temperatures drop below about 15°C.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed lightly with a diluted balanced fertilizer during the warm growing season.

WHERE TO PUT IT

A warm, stable room with bright indirect light and a moss pole to climb suits this rare aroid well. Keep temperatures consistently above 18°C for the best growth.
