Pseudobombax ellipticum - Shaving Brush Tree

Pseudobombax ellipticum - Shaving Brush Tree

SKU: 7506

🌿 The Shaving Brush Tree, scientifically known as Pseudobombax ellipticum, belongs to the Malvaceae family and originates from the tropical dry forests of Mexico and Central America. In its native habitat, this deciduous tree can reach impressive heights of up to 20 feet, though it remains much more manageable as an indoor plant. This is an intermediate to advanced care plant, suited for growers who enjoy seasonal changes and don't mind a dormant period. Here's something fascinating: the tree drops all its leaves in winter, going completely bare before producing its spectacular flowers directly on naked branches, a process called cauliflory that creates an unforgettable display.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

The Shaving Brush Tree has an upright, tree-like growth habit with a distinctive swollen trunk base called a caudex that stores water. The palmate leaves are composed of five to seven leaflets arranged like fingers on a hand, each leaflet elongated and elliptical in shape. The foliage is medium green with a smooth, slightly glossy texture. During the growing season, the canopy spreads nicely, but come autumn, the tree enters dormancy and sheds every single leaf, leaving behind sculptural bare branches and that interesting bulbous trunk.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers are the absolute showstopper of this plant. They appear on bare branches during the dormant period, typically in late winter to early spring, and look remarkably like old-fashioned shaving brushes with long, delicate stamens radiating outward. The blooms range from creamy white to soft pink with burgundy or wine-red filaments, creating a stunning contrast. There's a light, sweet fragrance that's pleasant without being overpowering. These flowers are architectural and exotic, offering a unique aesthetic that feels tropical and sculptural at once. To encourage flowering, the tree needs a proper dormant rest period with reduced watering and cooler temperatures in winter, plus bright light year-round. Mature plants flower more reliably, so patience pays off.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Full sun to bright indirect light. Needs 6-8 hours of bright light daily, ideally near a south or west-facing window. Can tolerate direct sun indoors.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when soil is completely dry during the growing season (spring through fall). In winter dormancy, reduce watering drastically to once a month or less, just enough to prevent caudex shriveling. Bottom watering works well.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Average home humidity of 40-50% is fine. Not fussy about humidity levels.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Add perlite or pumice for extra drainage. The caudex must not sit in moisture.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use terracotta or unglazed clay pots for breathability. Pot should be slightly larger than the caudex, with good depth for roots. Repot every 2-3 years in spring.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow to moderate. Expect 6-12 inches of growth per year during active season. Can reach 4-6 feet indoors over several years with proper care.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer or cactus fertilizer. Stop feeding completely during dormancy.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No, this plant is considered toxic to cats and dogs. The sap and plant parts can cause gastrointestinal upset if ingested.

WHERE TO PUT IT

The Shaving Brush Tree thrives in bright, sunny spots like south-facing windows, sunrooms, or conservatories where it can soak up maximum light. It works beautifully as a statement plant in living rooms, home offices, or entryways where its sculptural form can be appreciated year-round. During winter dormancy, you can even move it to a cooler room or garage with temperatures around 10-15°C to encourage the rest period it needs. Avoid placing it in low-light corners, bathrooms, or any area without strong natural light. Keep it away from cold drafts during the growing season and ensure pets can't access it due to toxicity concerns.
