Scindapsus pictus 'Jade Satin Variegata'

SKU: 6350

🌿 Scindapsus pictus 'Jade Satin Variegata', commonly known as Jade Satin Pothos, belongs to the Araceae family and originates from the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia where it climbs up trees in dappled shade. This variety showcases stunning jade-green leaves splashed with creamy white and silver variegation that seems to shimmer in indirect light. Classified as a beginner-friendly plant, it tolerates a range of growing conditions and bounces back from occasional neglect. Here's a fun fact: despite its common name including "pothos," this plant is actually a different genus entirely from the classic golden pothos, though they share similar easy-going care requirements.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This vining plant produces heart-shaped leaves that emerge with soft, velvety texture and develop into smooth, satiny foliage as they mature. The leaves display a jade-green base colour adorned with irregular splashes and speckles of cream and silvery-white variegation that creates a painted effect across each leaf. The growth habit is climbing or trailing depending on how you train it, with stems that can extend several feet when given proper support or cascade gracefully from a hanging basket.

FLOWER DETAILS

While Scindapsus pictus can produce small, inconspicuous spadix flowers typical of aroids, flowering is extremely rare in indoor conditions and the plant is grown exclusively for its attractive foliage rather than blooms. The flowers, when they do appear, are greenish-white and hidden within a spathe, lacking any notable fragrance or visual appeal. Indoor specimens rarely reach the maturity needed for flowering, so don't expect blooms from your jade satin pothos. Focus instead on encouraging lush, variegated foliage growth through proper light and nutrition.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal to maintain variegation. Can tolerate medium light but variegation may fade. Avoid direct sun which scorches leaves. Needs 6-8 hours of filtered light daily
  • 💧 Water: Allow top 2-3 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly until it drains from bottom. Spring and summer: water every 7-10 days. Fall and winter: every 10-14 days. Bottom watering works well to prevent overwatering
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Thrives in 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home humidity of 40-50%. Occasional misting appreciated but not required
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining, chunky mix with perlite, orchid bark, and peat or coco coir. Avoid dense, water-retentive soils that cause root rot
  • 🏺 Potting: Use pots with drainage holes, 1-2 inches larger than root ball. Terracotta or plastic both work. Repot every 18-24 months or when roots emerge from drainage holes
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower producing 1-2 feet of new growth per year under ideal conditions. Can reach 6-10 feet in length over several years when allowed to climb
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce to every 6-8 weeks in fall and skip winter feeding
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No, toxic to cats and dogs. Contains calcium oxalate crystals that cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets

WHERE TO PUT IT

The Jade Satin Pothos works beautifully in living rooms on shelves where it can trail down, in home offices on bookcases, or in bedrooms on dressers away from windows. It adapts well to bathrooms with natural light where it appreciates the extra humidity from showers. You can also grow it in hanging planters near east or north-facing windows, or train it up a moss pole in a bright corner. Avoid placing it in direct sun near south or west windows, in dark rooms without supplemental light, or anywhere within reach of curious pets or young children due to its toxicity.
