Sedum corynephyllum

SKU: 6523

🌿 Sedum corynephyllum, commonly known as the Club-Leaved Stonecrop, is a charming succulent from the Crassulaceae family native to the rocky hillsides of Mexico. This compact plant thrives in arid conditions and has adapted beautifully to life indoors with minimal fuss. It's a beginner-friendly choice that forgives the occasional forgotten watering and rewards you with interesting texture. Fun fact: the name "corynephyllum" comes from Greek words meaning "club-shaped leaves," a nod to the plant's distinctive foliage that looks like tiny green clubs stacked along the stems.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This stonecrop grows in a compact, upright to slightly sprawling habit, forming dense rosettes and clusters over time. The leaves are small, cylindrical, and club-shaped, appearing almost like miniature green beads threaded together. They have a smooth, waxy texture with a blue-green to pale green colour that can develop pinkish or reddish tones when exposed to bright light or cooler temperatures. The foliage is fleshy and plump, storing water efficiently.

FLOWER DETAILS

Sedum corynephyllum produces delicate star-shaped flowers in shades of yellow or white, typically appearing in late winter to early spring. The blooms are small but abundant, clustered at the stem tips and creating a soft, airy display. They have no notable fragrance but add a cheerful contrast to the succulent foliage. Flowering happens once annually under proper conditions. To encourage blooms, provide bright light during the winter months and reduce watering slightly to mimic the plant's natural dormancy period.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect to full sun. Needs 4-6 hours of bright light daily, tolerates some direct morning sun
  • 💧 Water: Water deeply but infrequently. In spring and summer, water when soil is completely dry (every 10-14 days). In fall and winter, reduce to once every 3-4 weeks. Use the soak-and-dry method, ensuring excess water drains completely
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers low to average humidity, 30-50% is ideal. Tolerates dry indoor air well
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent mix with added perlite or coarse sand for extra drainage
  • 🏺 Potting: Shallow terra cotta or ceramic pot with drainage holes, 4-6 inches wide. Repot every 2-3 years or when rootbound, preferably in spring
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow to moderate. Grows 2-3 inches in 6 months, reaches 4-6 inches in a year. Mature size is 6-8 inches tall and wide
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed once in spring and once in early summer with diluted cactus fertilizer at half strength. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though ingestion may cause mild digestive upset. Safe for households with curious pets

WHERE TO PUT IT

Place your Club-Leaved Stonecrop on a bright windowsill, preferably south or west-facing, where it can soak up plenty of light. It works beautifully in small dish gardens, on desks, or grouped with other succulents on shelving units. Bathrooms and kitchens are fine as long as there's adequate light. Avoid placing it in dim corners, north-facing windows without supplemental light, or areas with poor air circulation and high humidity like enclosed terrariums.
