Sinocrassula yunnanensis (Chinese Jade)

SKU: 7013

🌿 Chinese Jade (Sinocrassula yunnanensis), a member of the Crassulaceae family, is a charming miniature succulent native to the rocky mountain slopes of Yunnan Province in southwestern China. This compact grower forms tight rosettes of fleshy, jade-green leaves that create an almost geometric pattern. Perfect for beginner succulent enthusiasts, Chinese Jade thrives with minimal fuss and rewards neglect better than constant attention. Here's something fascinating: in its natural habitat, this little succulent grows in limestone crevices at elevations up to 3,000 meters, making it surprisingly cold-hardy for a succulent.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

Chinese Jade grows as a low, compact rosette that spreads slowly through offsets, creating a cushion-like mat over time. The thick, triangular leaves are arranged in tight spirals and display a beautiful jade-green colour with a waxy coating that helps them retain moisture. Each leaf feels firm and slightly rough to the touch, with a powdery surface that catches the light beautifully. The plant rarely exceeds 5-8 cm in height but can spread to about 15 cm wide as it produces baby rosettes around the mother plant.

FLOWER DETAILS

When happy, Chinese Jade sends up delicate flower stalks in late winter to early spring, bearing clusters of tiny star-shaped blooms. The flowers range from pale pink to white with darker pink stripes running through each petal, creating a soft, romantic appearance. While not strongly fragrant, the blooms add unexpected charm to this already adorable succulent. The flowering display typically lasts several weeks and occurs annually when the plant experiences cooler winter temperatures. To encourage blooming, give your Chinese Jade a cool rest period during winter months with slightly reduced watering and ensure it receives plenty of bright light throughout the year.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light to full sun for 4-6 hours daily. Can tolerate partial shade but grows more compact with good light.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when soil is completely dry, roughly every 2-3 weeks in summer and monthly in winter. Use the soak-and-dry method, allowing excess water to drain completely.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Thrives in low humidity, 30-40% is ideal. Excellent for dry homes and requires no misting.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent mix with added perlite or pumice for extra drainage. Gritty soil prevents root rot.
  • 🏺 Potting: Shallow terracotta or ceramic pots with drainage holes, 8-12 cm wide. Repot every 2-3 years in spring when plant outgrows container.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow-growing, producing 2-3 new leaf pairs every 6 months. Reaches mature size of 5-8 cm tall in 2-3 years with 15 cm spread through offsets.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted cactus fertilizer at quarter strength. No feeding needed in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes, non-toxic to cats and dogs. Safe choice for homes with curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Chinese Jade works beautifully on sunny windowsills, particularly in kitchens or home offices where you can admire its geometric form up close. It's an excellent choice for succulent arrangements, fairy gardens, or grouped with other small succulents on a bright shelf. This plant also thrives in unheated sunrooms or cool bedrooms where temperatures drop at night. Avoid placing it in humid bathrooms, dimly lit corners, or anywhere with poor air circulation, as these conditions can lead to rot or leggy growth.
